I dont know what motor i pulled today. casting number says d4te and the spark plugs face each other, two plugs face back of engine and then two back plugs face front of engine. its a eight cylinder engine, came out of a one ton dually truck, think it was a 73.help please I want to know the engine size so I can get parts.
well, the engine's a 74, and i'm gonna guess 360 or 390, b/c them are the only 2 engines that i have never taken close looks at, and i dont recall seeing an engine where the plugs face eachother... but it's a guess, dont expect me to be right... that's all i can think of!
the only ways i know of to tell the difference is either by decoding a number cast into the block(not sure where it is) or measuring the stroke of the crank. i agree it would be nice to know which one u have but is really only needed if u have to replace the rods or the crank. everything else is the exact same. they took a 360 and changed the stroke of the crank and length of the piston rods to change cubic displacement.
so is there any way to tell the 360 apart from the 390.
The blocks are exactly the same. You can pull a spark plug and measure the stroke and it will tell you exactly what you have. Someone here gave me the easiest way to do this. Pull the #1 and #4 spark plugs, take a dowel rod and stick it in the #1 plug hole and rotate the crank pulley until #1 is at top dead center. When #1 is at TDC, #4 will be at the bottom of the stroke. Make a mark on the dowel rod in each cylinder and the difference is your stroke.
The "D4TE" is a casting # the "D" is the decade of the casting mold in this case the 70's("C" would be the 60's)the 4 is the year of the casting mold 1974 "T" is for truck and the "E" is the suffix I believe which is the amount of times the casting was changed/upgraded.In your case most likely you have a 360 cid engine but a common upgrade was tthe 390.The only difference is the stroke, both have a 4.05" bore,a 360 has a 3.50" stroke and a 390 has a 3.784" stroke. There is no outside visible difference between both of these plants. Both of these engines come from the "FE" family of engines.I would try a shot in the dark and look at the VIN #the engine code is the 4th digit. The 360 2v low compression=5,360 2v=y,390 2v=H,390 4v=m
If the motor is out, look at the rear crank flange and/or pull the oil pan and get a casting number off the crank. The 390 has a square-ish notch on the rear flange, the 360 (or 352) has a bigger half circle cutout. As far as parts, aside from the rotating assembly, it shouldn't matter as the block is identical. Dropping a dowel into a cylinder is the quickest way to tell unlesss you can inspect to crank.
