Lots of info in the tech section and I can't believe how many people ask about a dropped oil pump shaft. Anyhow here's my story of wo.
Picked up a reubuilt 351w and drop it in a 81 f100. Did not know anything about the engine except it looked rebuilt. New pan, new timing set, all the plugs pressed in looked new.
Anyhow got the engine in primed the oil pump and fires it up. Heard some ticking in valve cover and shut it down. Put a mechanical gauge on and turned with a drill. No pressure and no oil out of pushrods. Lifted engine pulled pan and replaced oil pump (the one on it was brand new) cleaned screen and put back together. Got oil to fill line of gauge but not enough to register and no oil to top end.
Before I pull enigne out and back on the stand what can I check while in the car. If I pull the intake and check for oil in valley what will I be able to do if none. While I had pan off, everything under looked brand new so I don't think it was not rebuilt.
I did see a post about a missing plug in the valley but searched for it later and could not find.
I also dropped the oil shaft into the pan but it was standing up and was able to get it out with a magnet. When cleaning the pan I saw that little ridged washer and wondered what it was for. After reading the other posts I now know.
I read his post already and working through it. Heres the update. Took the fitting off the engine for the mechanical ggague and got oil there then took filter off and got oil there. WHere should I check next? Where does the flow go after the filter?
through the crank, then through the cam bearings. pop off your valve covers, pull the dist and take your electric drill in reverse, and turn the oil pump shaft. oil should come out of the push rods.put the oil filter and sender back on first or you'll have a mess. I'm thinking cam bearings installed wrong, holes not lined up. see if you have oil to the top first before you do anything else
Sounds like the problem. I know I'm already not geeting oil to the heads. It appears the cam bearing are installed wrong. I was just trying anything before I pull engine out.
