Question Retrofitting Classic F150s with Diesel Engines

I am a really big fan of the old style F150. Never liked the 1997 new version, and the newest 2004 models seem too boxlike. There are so many older trucks out there that it would be a shame to see them just fade into junk yards or rusting away in backyards. Wouldn't it be great if Ford or another company came out with a combination diesel engine/transmission to retrofit all the F150s? We all want to save the planet from harmful pollutants, so let's start by saving the old style F150s from landfills and scrapyards and breath new life into these classic trucks.

Thanks everyone for reading my post and I am looking forward to all replies.

Thanks guys. I know there is the swap forum. Its the only choice now. No way will I even think of buying a new SD. The cost is ridiculous. And besides, I prefer the old style much better.

hey im with ya man, i love these trucks too, and although right now theres lots of them out there, in due time they will be just as rare as those of the 60s and 70s. alot of these trucks do go to waste at junkyards, and i myself am a fan of keeping old cars on the road versus buying something new. be alot better for the earth if people just kept their old cars/trucks running than buying new junk. just my .02

I swapped a 4BT (3.9L 4 cylinder cummins turbo diesel) into a 93 F150. I just recently got it on the road, but expect between 25-30 mpg.

For a 1/2 ton pickup, the 4bt is a perfect balance of torque, weight, size and fuel economy.

just to be clear, a private small company or a single owner could do this.

the chance of ford doing this is nil.

Thanks guys. 4Bt-150, do you have any photos, and did you do your own work or have a mechanic do the swap. Me, I'm not a mechanic and would need to hire a mechanic or have a diesel shop do the installation. Quicklook2, if I had the money, I would start a shop that would swap the motors. I'm sure it would be quite a success, especially with the small diesel and its mpgs.

There is a guy over in one of the older forums, dent or bumpsides, perhaps, that did a double-blown turbo Izusu (?) from a cab over delivery truck. Really great read & engineering with lots of pics. Think he was getting over 20mpg till he put the second blower on it.

Great ideas. But a Ford 300 six will run as many miles as a diesel and it's an easy swap in.

I did 100% of the work myself. I couldn't afford to pay someone to do the swap for me, I would guess that I have over 100 hours into the swap.

I do have pics of the swap, I'm not sure how to post pics, if you pm me your email, I can send them.

Check out www.4btswaps.com for more info.

A cummins diesel should outlast a 300 6. But both are known to be high mile engines in their respective diesel/gas categories, so it is probably a moot point.

Improved fuel mileage was one of the main aspects that motivated me to do the swap. In 25,000 miles the fuel savings will have paid for the swap - and about half that long if i run Biodiesel.

I would love to do a swap like that into something like an old ranger or s10! About how involed is the swap? Price of a motor roughly? I'm sure others are curious.
