New tires causing noise from front end while in reverse only?
My brother has an 06 F150 XL 4X4 Scab. Same truck as mine except engines. He's running the 18" rims with brand new GY Silent Armors put on this past Saturday. Now he's getting a squeaking/squealing like noise only when backing up from the driver's side front. Applying the brake is not necessary for the noise to occur. He took it back to where he bought the tires and they said it was more than likely his lower ball joint.
I just went over and listened to it. It made the noise whiule just backing up gently, with and without turning the wheel. Personally, I think it's brake related, just by amount of coal dust/mud build and small stones visible on his caliper.
Any ideas? The truck probably has right at 60,000 miles on the clock.
Thanks in advance.
new tires are slightly slick from the manufacturing process...and if on concrete or a slick surface, may make a noise
also, check the brake shields. The tire shop might have accidently bent the shield.
did he upsize the tires?
The brake shield makes sense to me. As I mentioned above, there was a lot of visible garbage on the caliper...
Technically, yes, he has upsized. His truck came with the 17" Hankook/Steel Wheel combo. 50,000 miles ago he bought a set of the 18" (FX4 wheels?) with the BFG Longtrails ( I think) from a local used car lot. He replaced with the same tire size that was on the 18" wheels. This just started 5-6 days ago.
Thanks.
