Camshaft question

I want to know if the cam I have been running will be effecient with the the new setup or should I go with a higher lift cam. The engine will be a .030 over block, 360 flat top pistons with 390 crank and rods, long tube headers, edelbrock performer rpm intake, holley 750 carb with vacuum sec, and the transmission is getting a shift kit and I am having the stall speed changed to 2900 on the converter. For now I am running the stock 3.00 gear ratio. Will this cam work ok with this set up? Sorry, the camshaft is a comp cam magnum with a lift 0f .519 and a duration of 270. Thanks

yeah, that will work fine its 224 degrees at .050. without porting or better valve springs i wouldn't go a lot bigger. That gear sucks!

Thanks. I am having the machine shop that is rebuilding my cast heads change the springs. They measured and say with that cam the valve springs are binding. And I do plan on changing that gear very soon. Nothing too crazy though because I occasionaly drive this truck on the highway.

I might reconsider on the carb, but before I throw my 2 cents in I ave a few questions.First and foremost what do you plan to do with this rig?Daily driver or street strip or bogger? In a truck yoou want torque but not too much torque as you will be spinning the wheels every time you step n the gas t take off from a light. As for the carb,I was going to build a 390 with the same specs(I was going to use a crane hyd. roller cam)an the general concensus was to use a 600-650 cfm carb. The smaller ports will increase air velocity thus increasing torque.I decided to build a 428 police interceptor
thus I have decided to go with the Holley 750 so far the single pumper seems to be what I'm leaning towards.

I am building the truck for around town driving and occasionally a night at the track. I only drive the truck to take off trash and run errands. I already had the carburetor, so I am going to see how it works out. I may end up going to a 650 but we will see.

Well I dont know about Coil bind at .519" lift..But its allways best to go with the Cam Manufacturers Spring recommendations anyway.. Too make sure the lifters stay on the cam lobes, and for min. Valve float at the cams recommended Max rpm...

But I think if the truth be know..your stock springs were just wore out !
