I just bought a 69 F100 Custom Cab 2wd lwb 360 3tree w/centrifical od, I have begun the usual tune-up and general maintance, and have found my driver's side exhaust manifold to be cracked on two ears and splitting in the center. I am debating between attempting to find a replacement or just going with headers...
And yeah, those FPA headers mentioned in ratsmoker's FE FAQ post are nice... but $ way outta my league. How about the JEGS or Summit or PAW or... ? Do they all fit ok and it doesn't really matter? I'm also interested in having the tubes extend slighly into the heads for a positive seal?
Hey Truckster,
When it comes to headers, if "they all fit ok and it doesn't really matter", do ya think so many folks would shell out the big $$$ for the good ones?? Not gettin' on your case, just yankin' on your chain a bit and givin' you food for thought. Seriously though, if you are not gonna spend some $$$ building the engine into a monster, headers are usually more pain than they are worth. Only a tiny performance gain, commonly poor fit (unless you spend big $$$)higher under hood temps (again, unless $$$) and starter issues, just to name a few. If you are going to stay generally stock and want a good driver, replace the stock manifolds with these Shop 1A Auto® for Ford Pickup 352 390 Exhaust Manifold Pair With Lower Hardware 1968-76 for your F-Series Pickup
and read up on this forum about tricks on how to get the bolts out of the old manifolds/heads without breaking them off. Good luck in your endeavors and keep us posted. Oh Yeah, welcome to the forum, a bunch of great folks with a great wealth of tips and experience.

Truckster, welcome to the forum,Hedman makes some headers for the 360/390 for less than $200. I have had mine on for the past 10 yrs. They fit ok but removal of the stock is hell and bolt removal requires lots of penetrating oil, several days of it, patience, and lots of prayers so they wont break. Only problem I encountered was having to remove starter, lift engine slightly, to install passenger side header, copper seal, leave pas side header lose to put back the starter. I painted mine with high heat resistant paint and they still look like new before installing. It was my first upgrade from stock of anything, They made a difference in performance in acceleration, and they are legal in all 50 states.
