I should have posted here first instead of the 73-79 forum, but here goes:
I currently have two 78 f150's, one 4wd, one 2wd. They both have 351m, the 4x4 will need a rebuild soon, and would like to make a 400 build out of it. What are some opinions about what to put in a 400 mainly used for the street, but not afraid to raise a little hell either.
Things like cam choice, manifold, carb, headers etc. Any opinions greatly appreciated. Think budget-build also.
I already told you what I did to my 400, but with regard to yours, I think if you put a set of Tim Meyers flat top pistons in, a better cam with a "straight up" timing gearset, and a good set of headers, I think you might be able to wake up your plant a bit. Before I started my project, my engine was basically stock, but had an RV cam and a set of headers, and it had no problem pulling hard.
It'll still boil down to how well you can make it breathe, and if you stick to stock heads, you're always going to be fighting the uphill battle. The cheapest fix on that is a set of iron austrailian heads, which will breathe a LOT better than stock. Edelbrock makes heads for the 400 now too, and then there's the deep end for weirdos like me that went with CHI. I don't know what the Edelbrocks run price wise, but I don't think the austrailian heads are overly expensive. Tim Meyer can get a hold of a set of those for you, I think.
Anyway, those would be some of my "budget" answers for you.
Yeah, I've seen those numbers thrown around a lot myself. To be honest, I couldn't tell you for sure as my own cam is having to be custom ground for my application.
The one i used to have consisted of flat top pistons, ported stock heads 10.1 compression, crane roller cam, adjustable crane roller rockers, timing gear drive, weiand intake, 660 truck carb, 13/4 hedman headers. That thing was awsome the best motor i ever built it had no problem turning 37'' boggers to smoke any time. I still have some of this stuff if your interested i have been hagging on to it thinking i would put it back together but it aint never going to happen.
