97 manual engine into automatic truck?

I think i made a big mistake so here I am. I have a 97 autmatic truck that needs a new engine. I took some advice that may have lead me in the wrong direction. There was a great deal on a low mile engine out of a 5 speed truck so I picked it up. After I removed my engine, I swaped alll my parts leaving the flywheel for last. Sure enough, the crank is about an inch longer on the 5 speed engine than the automatic engine. is there a way around this without swapping cranks?

Hmmm...I've never heard of that before. After having spent the last ten years on various diesel forums and reading about a bunch of different engine and transmission transplants I don't remember that ever being mentioned as a problem or as a warning for those who were contemplating a swap. Sorry I couldn't help, but I have to ask. Are you sure? It just doesn't seem likely that IH would build two different engines.

Rodney, what do you think the odds are that he doesn't have the torque converter all the way into the trans?
FWIW: Same here, never heard of 2 different crankshafts either...but you never know.

I actually have both engines out side by side in my shop. I said it backwards on my first post. The 5 speed engine has the shorter crankshaft than the automatic by an inch. the flywheel will bolt on but I think it would be a waste of time to experiment on my own. With the different lengths, i dont think the starter would work or the torque converter would fit all the way into the trans either.

Did you remove the spacer that goes between the trans and engine on an e4od. IIRC it's about an 1"

So there is a spacer on the back of the crank on a E4OD truck?

Hummph, i guess you learn something new everyday.

Reps sent Jim. Now that's thinking. Aren't you a member of problem solvers anonymous?

Thanks again Neal. Problem causer (is that a word) is more like it...and not so anonymous LOL!

BTW: The spacer is between the engine block and trans on a e4od....looks like a big horse shoe. Your 5 speed doesn't have one.

It adapts the crank to the ring gear.

On another note.
Be shure and change the block dowl pins.
They are not the same lenght. (man and auto)

both engines had the the horse shoe spacer. the spacer im talking about looked just like a wheelspacer on the end of the automatic crankshaft. moving it to the 5 speed engine was easy and it worked perfect. that wasnt the end of myproblems however. i worked until 4am and it wont start! it dosnt look like its getting fuel because when i pull the filter top and turn the key on nothing happens. so im on to searching the forums again! lol

the only dowel pin i had to change was the one on the crankshaft to fit the spacer. the dowel pins from both engines were the same length after i moved the horseshoe spacer

You have to rotate the motor to pump fuel.
The sd has electric fuel pump.

The use of the wrong dowl pins can cause a cracked ring gear.
Bean found this out the hard way. Many cracked wheels before
the problem was solved.
