How much oil are you using in your 5.4's? Mine with now over 180k is using about a quart every three weeks. No smoke or burning, did a tuneup while back and plugs were in good shape. Just wondering what everyone else is seeing.
I don't see where that much oil consumpsion could be considered normal. If he changes his oil ,say, every 4000 miles he would be going through 4 extra quarts of oil between changes. That's hardly normal. My 5.4 with 76000 miles on it is still on the full mark of the dipstick after 4000 miles. I guess my engine is abnormal.
He said 400 miles is his average mileage per week. That means 1200 miles per quart and is as per Ford Motor Co, considered as normal. I didn't say that is what I have experienced just that it is acceptable by their standards. I would suggest to change the PVC valve and to be sure to use the specified weight of oil, 5W-20. Good luck!
If that is considered normal then why even bother changing the oil, just change the filter every 4000 miles and the oil gets replaced anyways under "normal" operation. Personally I have had 2 4.6's, the '97 used about a quart every 5000 miles (synthetic) and the '03 doesn't use any oil at all. My Grand Am uses a quart every 1000 miles and it drives me nuts!
I know it is not a 5.4 but the 4.6 in my 97 f150 with 155K miles uses about 3/4 of a quart in 5k miles. That is using mc 5w30. The 4.6 in my 02 mountaineer with 82K miles uses about 1/4 qt in 5k miles using mc 5w20. Just to use as a comparison.
