"R" Code heads w/ an "S" code manifold

I have a pair of '68 "R" code heads and a 65 "S" code manifold for my 390.

I noticed that the ports on the manifold are 1/4" shorter in length than the head ports.

Will this combo work, or will I end up with issues I will regret?

I think the smaller intake ports are normal. Later setups, like my highboy's 390 with C8 heads and edel intake, the intake ports were smaller than the head ports.

As long as the head ports are larger than the intake ports, you're OK. Some would port-match the two.

But before you do anything, wait for others here to respond.

Thanks Art.

I looked at opening up the ports on the manifold, and it looked like I would end up with a 1/8" to 3/16" outside lip when it was done...seems a little to thin for me..but I'm not an expert on tolerances.

I will wait for more feedback..

What do you intend to do with the engine? What vehicle is it going in? Truck? Car? Going to tow anything?

It is going in a '66 F250..

Towing would be light and minimal..more of a daily driver/cruiser..

I'm surprised no one else has jumped on this.

If you hold an intake gasket up to the intake, and to the head, are the intake ports smaller than the head ports on all sides, or just the bottom? If it's just the bottom, I wouldn't bother doing anything, especially at only 1/4" difference. That's supposed to be that way, it keeps the intake charge moving at a good speed and it helps it to travel into the head better.

On the other hand, you could port match it. But then, it's a truck.

What gears do you have in it? 4x4?

I wouldn't bother with port matching, but that's just me. If 90% of your driving were at wide open throttle, I'd say get a different intake.

The intake you have is perfect for what you want to do.
