I think these are dual cats, two stage or some such business.

Is there NOTHING in the first one? Just a can?

Only takes a few seconds to look under it and see how many. If it has two, they can be replaced with a single high flow, 3-way unit.

They're both cats. I cut mine off of my truck to replace them with a single high flow 3 way converter and they both had the honeycomb material in them. My guess is that the first one is a two way cat and the second one is to filter the nitrogen oxides that two way cats don't help with, but that's just my guess.
