96 hard start

hello,

This is my Dads truck and I'm trying to help him long distance so ANY help would be nice. Like it says hard to start, cold or warm no difference. It takes 4 or 5 times of cranking to get it to start and will almost start but doesn't untill after the 4 to 5 time deal. It also helps it to start if the accelerator is about 1/2 down. When it does start, lots of white smoke, not so much when warm. Once running it runs fine, no noticeable problems, no bucking, stalling etc. good power.

What's been checked so far is: GPR, harness and plugs them selves, OK. Engine oil level OK, does not gain on dipstick, not foamy either. There is oil in the HPOP, 1/2'' from plug. No fuel or oil leaks anywhere. Fuel will come out of the service port on the filter housing when engine is running if you push the schrader valve, however, when engine is not running no fuel will come out of the valve at all. Is this normal? Is it supposed to bleed down within seconds of the engine off? Have not checked for faults as I don't have a scan tool just yet but want to do what I can first.

If the injector o rings were leaking would fuel leak into the combustion chamber or just the crankcase? If this is my problem, how would one determine which injector(s) are leaking, without a scan tool? Sorry if this is long but I tried to remember what's been done to hopefully have an idea what to do next. Any Ideas??

i know you said the HPOP oil level is 1/2" from the top but i would top it off, personally. dont know if thats enough to cause a no start or not. also, if the oil quality is bad enough the oil cant flow through the injectors fast enough (esp when the oil is cold) and they wont fire. when was the last time the oil was changed?

just my .02 worth (from my own experience

one way to determine if your injector o-rings are good is to inspect the fuel filter...if its whitish its good....if its solid black, like mine was, it "could" be your o-rings are chewed up...just a lil' from my limited experience...

Could be your IPR o-rings. The HPOP would still stay full also if it were the IPR o-rings. Easy fix, and the parts kit is 19.99 at IH.

Ok thanks everyone. Oil has recently been changed and fuel filter is not black , haven't checked IPR, that's next. What I don't understand is all the white smoke when it finally fires. It would seem it's getting fuel, no? I'll keep digging.
