I have a 97 Ford Explorer and the O/D light is flashing.
I checked the manuel and it tells me to have my
Transmission checked. It's not slipping, it's still going
into gear. Any thoughts.
The flashing light means SOMETHING is wrong with the transmission system. It could be the transmission itself, a sensor, or wiring.
If you can't tell any difference in the way it operates it probably is something minor. Don't let it go very long - minor transmission problems have a way of turning into complete rebuilds if they are ignored! :-staun
The only way to know is to use an OBDII compliant scan tool and read the code(s), then follow the diagnostic procedures.
That is way too much money. Is this the dealer price? I paid $1800 for a E4OD rebuild and cooler, incuding tax and all labor, on a 4x4 F-150.
The problem was torque converter clutch slippage, but at 116k, I decided to have the whole thing done.
Try to ask around for a reputable independent shop. Stay away from the chain that advertises on TV!
The quote I got was from the dealer. Well, I went and
picked up my truck and the light hasn't been back
on since and it's driving well. A co-worker of mines
seems to think maybe the o/d button was stuck because
that happen to his daughter. When it happens again
I will take it to a place that specialize in
transmissions. Anyone from NJ, that can help me where
to it.
Alicia,
I'm not from NJ (KS, actually), but if there is an Ammco Transmission in your area, give them a call. Had a C6 rebuild there a few years ago, not a problem since. Looking at having another done, in my other truck, and in a 4X4, t'case and all to remove, it would be $800 in the truck, $450 carry in. Granted, your trans would probably cost more (newer, electronic, etc), but Ammco also has a warrenty, which I assume Ford does also.
Might be worth the look.....
Thanks, I will check out ammaco out. It's just
being a woman I get ripped off so much. The dealership
charged me $160.00 to look at it. So, far the
light hasn't been back on and still driving
like it should.
Since the light is out and it is driving well I'd leave it alone. If the light comes on again, then get a second opinion. False lights/codes are not unheard of.
Aamco are the people I warned you about. Good ones may exist, but the horror stories are endless. They talked a friend of mine into a transmission replacement on a Camry, and the problem turned out to be in the engine computer. He was stuck because he approved the work based on the faulty diagnosis! Please try and find a reuputable independent shop.
