Hey yall, I got a question. I have an 89 F250 with a 351 attached to a manual 5 speed, now i want to put in a 6.9 international , that had come in earlier fords, my truck is in mint condition and the gear box is mint, nothings wrong with it at all. the truck and frame itself is worth keeping, so i guess my question is will the 6.9 mate up to my gearbox, i'm not quite sure what my gearbox is so I guess i just need some insight on this thanks
I'm not sure about '89 manuals, but in the early '90's, the 351 had it's clutch slave cylinder around the transmission input shaft inside the bell housing. The diesels had an externally mounted slave cylinder.
If your going to the trouble of installing a diesel in your truck, make sure you have it turbo'd. Makes a BIG difference in power and mileage.
sounds good- the 6.9 was a great engine for it's time, but with easier and higher hp engines available, why not use that instead? If you're looking for the easiest install, I'd go with an early 12v 5.9- no electronics, and plenty of bolt on parts available. Not to mention you can get 20+ mpg out of one. Good luck in whatever you do!
Well I think I've made my choice with the 5.9 12v, thank you and keep up the good fight, I support you guys especially the marines. If anyone else has any further input itd be greatly appreciated
12v is a great motor just dont use any dodge trans behind it they are junk. There sticks hold up but the company that makes them went out of buisness and parts are threw the roof on them now. There autos are just junk i went threw 4 and the last three where 5k trannies! Thats why i went to a ford 7.3 much better built truck (other then the stupid electric 4x4.) I had about 750tq rear wheel with only about 1000 bucks into the motor. I just ran injectors, delevery valves, fuel govener springs, 0 plate, and boost kicked up to 35psi. great engines but everything on them is expensive as all hell! i had 230k and it started up faster then any new diesel out there.
You can get a nv4500 or. Nv5600 tranny 5 or 6 speed respectively just avoid the other dodge manual tranny. You could also go with the 4bt engine it can make impressive power and is a straight 4
There is a guy around here that does mobile auto maintenance. He has a large walk-in van with a little 4cyl cummins diesel. He pulled out the auto trans and put in a stick (don't know which one, probably an NV4500) and that vehicle really moves well for it's size. I like to watch him fly down the street.
Ya know that's true- they used a lot of the 4bt's in bread trucks and such. Those things can be built for upwards of 600 hp, but it'll cost ya a pretty penny. Either way, you'll get alot more torque and fuel economy than a 351.
I've heard a lot about the 4bts but I'd much rather have a 5.9 and I know all too well the dodge trannies suck especialy under pressure
And power but now I just need to find a 5.9 for cheap. But hey please keep the advise coming its greatly appreciated and it seems like you
Guys seem like you know what you're talking about so keep the advice coming
Look up JTHARVEY in the 7.3 forum- he blew up his 7.3 and replaced it with the De-Stroked kit. I'm sure he can point you in the right direction to get started. As far as a cheap 5.9, there's ebay, craigslist, and of course the local junkyard.
