I was set on a performer Intake and 800 Edelbrock carb for my 429 but "The Boyz" have been telling me to go with a Holley..... Anyone have any input as to why one is better....I have been told in the past that the Holley needs to be tinkered with all the time but never seen it??
I would suggest the holley due to tunability. A good carb to buy is the one that quick fuel sell. Get a lot of carb and tunability. I would suggets the annular booster 750 cfm. You might have to jet carb for you situation but ran several of these carbs and very pleased with this holley design. Can find in jegs mag if curious. Ran the edelbrocks and they ran well but holleys will win out everytime. Nobody winning at the track with edelbrocks. Don't mean to beat up on edelbrock but they do what they are designed to do and run well but sometimes we want more.
Also ran the weiand stealth and edelbrock air gap both dual planes and prefer the air gap for summer situation over stealth. No heat crossover to boil fuel in carb. In cold weather the air gap is kind of tricky to learn but carb has to be tuned decent ro run correct. Air gap doesn't make any heat to vaporize fuel in cold weather until the engine warms up. Needs around 130 degrees before it starts to work and it'll seem like you hit a switch and the intake just starts working. Cold weather to me is 20 degree's and colder down into -10 or colder.
I run 750 cfm model 4160 holleys on my 73 tbird with a 460 and my 75 truck with a 429. Been pretty happy and easy to tune. I got mine from Summit racing. I looked it up they have gone up in price since I bought mine but part number HYL-O-80508S 750 cfm with electric choke, PVC spark vacuum ports, fast idle cam and speed adjustment, Ford auto trans kickdown, daul inlet bowls, tumble-polished finish for $309. I think it was around $225 6 years ago when I bought mine for my truck. At least the rebuild kits are only $22.95
Demon!!!!
Everything you love about a Holley, only better..........
Venturi design, shape, billet baseplate and metering blocks, 4 corner idle,,,,,,,more and more and more.
It does not get much better than this.
Breeze to tune, and runs awesome.
WHich one you chose is up to you, but the Demon carb is leaps and bounds ahead of the standard Holley.
This is a brilliant investment.
750 annular booster billet metering plate and 4 corner idle. Also you get a linkage setup for 1 to 1 linkage and 2 other different opening rates. I prefer the 1 to 1 for low end torque and midrnage. Demon is good stuff also and you won't go wrong either way. The Quick fuel 750 was around 550.00 to 600.00 if I remember correctly. If your not familiar with booster designs drop me a PM and I'll help explain anything you need to know and why. I like the annulars for heavy truck and low end type situations and they work in high rpm situations also. most people don't realize the difference until they ride in it. A dyno will also tell you the difference and you notice fuel consumption will go down a little if set up correctly in low rpm. I tend to drop 1 jet compared to down leg or straights type boosters.
