ATF

What type of fluid did the old Ford (53 to 58) auto trans use, and what do you use now? Thanks

Keep in mind I am guessing here so DO find a reliable source of info.

I would guess the really old Ford trannies used the Type F ATF(Kind of honey colored not usually red). That was fairly common in the 60's and 70s but I have no idea about the 50s, I think stores still sell it. I didn't know trucks had autos in the 50s.

You might alos post your question undeer the truck listing for that year. there are guys in there who probably have the same model as you and would know the real answer.

I just tried buying some Type F tranny fluid and was told by the store owner (NAPA) it's no longer available...use Type FA instead.
By the way...I've used Type F in all my racing auto trannies whether they were Ford or C****, type F had a higher coefficient of friction which produces a more positive shift. Probably not felt by "the seat of the pants" but would make a few hundreths or thousanths of a second differance in the quarter mile. I'm putting type FA in my Corvette this weekend since I can't get type F anymore. Deen
