Electric Cooling Fan Installation

I installed a Flexalite electric cooling system on my 03 F250 SD with automatic and 7.3 PS diesel. Here is a run down on it......

Got it from Truck Accessories.com for $510 incl shipping and it arrived in 3 days.

To install, drain the coolant until the overflow tank is empty. Remove the coolant tank and then remove the stock fan and shroud. There are special tools for this, but I used waterpump pliers on the big nut holding the fan on and a wooden wedge between the fan pulley and serpentine belt to get the nut loose. If there are a lot of miles on the serpentine belt, this is a good time to change it. Mine had over 100,000 on it and I put on a new belt ($38) from AutoZone. The old one now rides under the seat as a spare.

The Flexalite installs as a unit and can be done by one person in a gravel driveway while laying on a cardboard box. Wiring is simple and straightforward and adequately explained in the instructions.

Manufacturer claims up to 5% better mileage and a 27 HP gain since the engine is no longer required to pull the big and heavy stock fan. Not so sure about the 27 HP gain, it does seem to rev quicker though and the tires break loose easier than before if the throttle is floored at a stop. The milage gain for me is just over 2mpg in mixed city/highway driving, so that claim proved to be true. No overheating problems. Have not towed with it yet. Supposed to be good for 18K GW.

I am pleased with the setup and will eventually amortize it with fuel savings and hopefully less wear on the engine and water pump.

Cheers

How many amps is that and did you have to install a bigger alternator?

Came with a 30 amp cicuit breaker so I guess that is what it draws. They run at different speeds depending on coolant temp and A/C use. Rated at 6200cfm with both fans wide open. I am using the stock alternator. The dealer indicated that it made plenty of power for the setup and did not recommend a HO alternator.

Nice item for your 7.3L.

They are really not advantageous due to the fan technology on the 6.0L - although a few folks have tried it out there.
