Question Bypass Filter

Sorry guys I know this has been talked about before, but I cant seem to find the answer. I am installing a bypass filter on my truck, and I know you should use the ports right by the regular oil filter, but what are the size and thread on those ports. If anyone knows off hand then I wont have to take mine apart until I'm ready to install. Thanks

Most oil bypass system kits come with the proper fittings.. no need to buy additional. Or are you making your own kit.. ?

The pressure out size is 1/8" NPT

The return back in is 3/8" NPT.

Thanks Marv thats exactly what I needed.

Now if I can find a 3/8 npt to 1/8 npt adapter. My kit came with all 1/8 npt parts. Thanks again

You can get just about any fitting you need at Lowes or Home Depot. Brass works fine.

It's purpose is to by pass the tranny cooler when the tranny is cold, so that the fluid gets up to optimal operating temp quicker. The only bad thing about it, which is a rare occurance- is that sometimes it sticks open and will keep the fluid circulating internally, and not through the cooler like it's supposed to. This will cause your tranny to over heat real quick, and some indicators (if you don't have your own gauge) are a puking dipstick, truck not moving, a temp light, and in some cases a LOT lighter wallet.

I think you may have missed something. I have been talking about a bypass oil filter not a bypass for the tranny cooler.

A bypass Filter is usually used for better filtration. You keep your original oil filter and add another. The original filter continues to do its normal job while the by-pass filter takes oil at a much slower speed and filters it a lot more. It helps to entend the life of your oil and keeps your engine clean. The big rigs use them a lot. It really helps especially if you run the expensive synthetic oils. I hope that helps

Even though it's off topic, it's important for Mongo to know that the transmission bypass valve opens as a function of higher-than-normal pressure in the output port to the cooling circuit for the trans, NOT temperature.

The only time that the bypass valve actually bypasses the output fluid directly back to the return port is when there is some kind of clog or other restriction in the cooler circuit.

In a healthy system, the bypass should never open. The only reason that temperature might ever have anything to do with this is if the truck is in SEVERE cold, the kind that actually gels the transmission fluid. That would cause a cooler restriction. But remember, that's SEVERE cold! Besides, it wouldn't un-gel the lines anyway.

We now return to our normally-scheduled discussion about engine lube oil filtering.
