My truck '03 F150 4.2 has a lot,lot of miles on it 286K but still runs very well..
recently it has started to ping under light acceleration. I sent it to the dealer for the first time in her life and they say nothing is wrong, no codes, no problem. I'm thinking dirty EGR or slack in the timing chain. Is there any easy way to check cam to crank play without taking it apart? All idea's to resolve this ping welcome.
I hate to make this suggestion, but here goes......try running some Premium fuel in it.Perhaps at least one full tank, maybe two.See if the issue goes away.
This could be a timing chain situation concerning the miles, but in order to confirm this theory, youll basically have to take the front end off the engine to physically "look" at the slack.....
Thanks, burned 2 tanks of premium before the dealer trip, and I guessed disassembly was going to be my option. Thinking back I had 2 codes P0174 and P1132 a year or so ago on vacation. I sent it to a local shop and the light was out when i got it back and i think that was a lean problem.
I dont recognize the codes, but if you have tools, and a decent place to do it, you could just replace the timing chain, and sprockets.I use www.rockauto.com (one of our sponsors) for all my NON-Essential repairs. They are reasonable, and ship super quick.
Otherwise, the pinging could be anything from fuel injectors,to a sensor. Considering the fact that you get no codes,I dont suspect sensor.....Usually Plugs can tell the condition of the engine...You might wanna pull them, and take a look.
my 97 has the same number of miles and same engine. I just went through the same problem. I tried new plugs (that sucked). New Fuel filter. Cleaned MAF. Still had same issues to a somewhat less degree. A fellow ford lover suggested a tank of premium with a can of seafoam and then a computer reset (unplug battery for a couple mins). This fixed it.
seafoam is a fuel aditive you get at the parts store. Its not cheap at about $9 per treatment. Its also the only one I will ever buy again. Interestingly enough the ping did not stop until I did the reset. I know the foam worked as I had tried the reset only the week before with a diff injector cleaner. The seafoam actually cutts carbon. This is a rare thing for any chemical to do with out eating your engine too.
