I used a stock rotating assembly from the 302 I was running. $0
$1500 heads
Pistons were .030 over $400
machine work was $1000

I used the same carb, intake, rockers, cam and lifters and obviously the headers that I was running in my 302. So do I have to pay for that twice? If I go by your rules I guess so.....

I guess my point was......if you had a stock 87-93 mustang you could add that same 1500 set of heads, keep everything else the same......maybe add a different cam and be right where I was too. But we aren't talking about mustangs here we are talking about trucks.

So, what would you all change from stock on your 400m to make that same power intake to pan?

This is a good discussion.

the other engine listed didn't mention a price for his heads, intake, exhaust manifolds or carb either.

I just assumed he reused the stuff he had.

If your refering to me concerning the heads, they are listed, Australian heads. In that build manifold, intake and carb were reused.

We were talking total motor costs, some one else who wants to duplicate your engine they will have to buy all that stuff. The $4200 figure for the 400 was a total cost number yours was not. Don't really care what you had to start with. The price for the 400 was what it would cost to got from stock 400 to the one shown. Your price is no where near what it costs to go from stock 302 to the one you described. So if you take the prices I added up and add your pistons and machine work we get $3579.98. I am just trying to get a TOTAL build price.

500 horse for $3500, ya right... It takes serious cash to make 500 horse I don't care what kind of engine you have... Maybe 350 horse for that kind of money...Just going off experience.

Do you have a copy of that dyno sheet?

The intake, carb and headers would fall in the $2000 worth of parts he provided. This was just what I assumed any way I could be wrong. I am just trying to point out that building a 302 from stock isn't any cheaper than building a 400 from stock. If you reuse the stock heads then don't add them to the price, pretty much if it came on the motor from the factory and gets reused it doesn't count against the price. I just like the 400 because it isn't ungodly expensive to build and the 478lbs of torque at 2900 rpms looks real good for a truck, you won't get that torque that low with a naturally aspirated 302.

Are you guys exceeding the speed limit? LOL I'm sure if you spend enough money you could superturbonitrousfy a 4 cylinder to go fast yada yada... Why not buy a crate V10 from Mopar and adapt it? or or Is budget an issue here and are we drag racing? Geez now I think I may need a Cobra 5.4 DOHC in my mustang now instead of my 4.6 SOHC. If you go smallblock, I'd root for getting a roller tappet cam from a newer 5.0.

The original poster was looking for opinions, if you have experienced hard data post up.

How much did it cost you and how much hp did you make?
