Anyone ever put a grease fitting on the shaft of the 4x4 lever? I am working on doing that and I am not sure I wanted to check with you guys first see if anyone could recommend a size grease fitting and placement? I was going to center it. thanks guys.
Never heard of anyone putting a grease fitting on the transfer case lever. Seems like overkill to me. Spraying it down every once in a while with lithium should be enough.
Not a bad idea. I don't know if they have much of a seal on either end of that Assembly. The grease will probably work its way out pretty quickly. I would try to locate it more to the top, gravity will pull it down through the assembly, leaving enough room to access it once its reinstalled. I don't know how thick of a wall that tube has ? you may be able to drill, tap & install a zirc fitting? Make sure that the fitting does not bind/catch traveling parts inside there. If it works out Ok, post pro's and con's of the install. If they came form Ford with a fitting, mine would be greased up.
I thought it was on this forum I read it but it may have been on the jeep forums that everybody is doing it and saying how good it is working for them. I tried the take apart clean and lithium and so did my neighbor and 2 months after even with use both of ours is stiff and not working correctly again. I will do mine and post how it worked. thanks guys.
Finally got around to doing this, had to replace all hangers and put air bags on rear. I used a 1/4 regular threaded angled (45 degree) grease fitting. I drilled and tapped into the top portion of the shaft (below the top rings) and screwed it in and for good measures used metal to metal glue for extra support. If you use any bigger you will need to cut about 2 threads off the fitting (you can only cut the threads of an angled fitting, if you cut a straight fitting you will cut the spring out) I placed the whole bracket back on the truck and took a 1" wrench and took that big pivot bolt you see at the top off about 1-2 spins. It worked great and moves and clicks like brand new, no more ripping the **** off trying to move it. I used regular grease, I cannot say for sure but I tried to remove this rod from the shaft and it seems to be secured with a welded rod at the bottom and the lever at the top so i was unable to do it that way. Also be very careful because the metal the shaft is made of seems to be a very cheap cast. Good luck all.
Forgot all took it off yesterday worked on it last night (about 30min) and took me about 20 min to put back on the truck. The worst part was getting the link to the transfer case off and the rust shower my eyes got
