Supin a 5.4L

Help! Need more pep out of my 5.4l with 3.73 axle any suggestions? I'm use to the 6.0 Chevy's which are race car quick what is the difference other than slight HP favoring the Chevy's? Is the throttle delay system the culprit? Or am I feelin like Benedict Arnold goin with Ford?

The throttle response is a big part of I would think compaing hp #s I know the 5.4 seems like a gutless wonder compared to the chevy 6.0. I would try the sct with custom tunes

There is a lengthy thread on this issue (see link below). I highly recommend contacting Mike at 5 Star Tuning to see what he can do for you with an SCT tuner. I also recommend getting the custom tunes and they only a few dollars more. My SCT Livewire really woke up my 5.4L!

The chevy will have a little more power because of the added displacement. Your gears are not a great choice for off line power, 3.73 was the highest available. My ratio comes to 4.30 with stock tires and it's barely quick. You can boost the hp/tq all you want, but until you put it to the ground stronger you will not see a big increase.

I would suggest a cold air intake, exhaust, tune and gears. Get the air in and out, then give it a little more fuel and put all of that down with a lower final drive ratio.

Muchas Gracias, I have enough peso's at the moment to throw on a Magnaflow setup or a programmer which would be the better way to go?

Of those choices, I'd say tune. However if you go with one of the semi-customs make a plan of the mods your going to do so they will be supported without having to order new ones every time.

Sorry I'm new to this stuff, so if I do plan on adding an exhaust sytem later order the tune with that? If the tune wakes it up enough I would prob drop the plan of the exhaust. I had a Magnaflow on a previous F 250 and a Chevy HD and after awhile I tired of the noise. It would seem the fellers here are high on the SCT Tune? Is there other tunes to consider or is this one flat out the best one for my situation. 05 F250 Superduty ext cab short 5.4L 3.73. Also after the tune do I need to run high octane fuel? And does mpg suffer? Boy I feel like a dumba$$ with all these questions

There's absolutely no need to "compensate" for an exhaust kit. The only item that'll need to be taken into account in a tune file is anything that changes the airflow through or into the MAF.

You can get different standard tunes from SCT or you can get custom tunes from the sct dealer. I went to Mike at 5 Star and got an SCT X3 which holds standard tunes and up to 3 custom tunes. I got an:
87octane economy tune 1-2mpg mileage improvement
87octane power tune no change in mileage
93octane power tune 1mpg loss

I run 87 power most of the time, use eco when driving long distances for work, and use 93 when going long distances with my horse trailer or full loads of hay.

Also in the SCT X3, there is a range of user selectable parameters where you can change things yourself.

Hope this helps,

JE

It'll make the truck get better mileage due to the MUCH lighter wallet in your back pocket.
You couldn't give me a livewire-they're a big steaming pile of poo.
