83 wait-to-start light constantly on??

I need some help with getting the wait-to-start light to "turn off". Have an '83 6.9 that has had the glow plug controller fail and a manual glow plug switch installed. this was done by unplugging the connection at the original glow plug controller and installing a manual switch to activate the glow plug relay (which works very well). Only annoying aspect is that the "wait-to-start" idiot light now stays on continually. Have a generic manual for the '83 but it's wiring diagram is silent on how the wait-to-start light is wired (pretty much ignores diesel aspects unfortunately). Other than simply removing the bulb in the idiot light (which I will do as a last resort), does anyone have any information on how the wait-to-start light is wired in the '83 trucks. One thread I found indicated there should be a lead from the glow plug relay's load output (that feeds the glow plugs) which also illuminates the idiot light; my relay doesn't have anything on this post but the twin large wires feeding the glow plugs. Information, Suggestions, or Applicable Wiring Diagrams would be appreciated.

I bet right now the WTS light is hooked up to the post with the battery cable - move the wire for the light from the post where it is now to the "load" post where the two wires for the glowplugs are, that should do it.

Nope as for the lead being on the battery side of the relay-- only wire there is the large red one leading to the right side battery's positive terminal-- any other suggestions??

Is there more than the wires to the glow plug on the other terminal? It is possible the wire got overlooked and is laying on a power supply possibly. Otherwise, did you verify the relay isn't stuck on?

Nope. The only wires on the relay posts are the 1 large red wire from the battery positive terminal on one large post, 2 large-ish orange wires to the glow plugs on the other large post, one small black wire going to ground on one small post of the relay and one small purple wire going to power source through manual switch to activate the glow plug relay-- no other wires and don't see any laying loose in the area that may be picking up stray power??
Does anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for the '83 6.9 glow plug system??

Okay bro, i just did this yesterday. To properly wire this sucker up use this wiring diagram. It worked well for me and it is really simple. Match it up to what you have in your truck and it will help you trouble shoot. This is to bypass so ignore the purple wire removal, but make sure it is really hooked to the switch. Also you should have some kind of power source to the switch, make sure that connection is good.

My truck is currently on the road, so I didn't have it to look at to see that, and wasn't coming up with any diagrams... thanks!

no problem bro, you can find it too if you do "glow plug relay" image search on google. Hope it works out for you, post up if not or if so!

Wreckinball-- Thanks for the schematic and it is basically what I have EXCEPT that there isn't a pink wire connected to the glow plug power leads?? And I don't see any disconnected pink wire anywhere around the relay. So either the '83 wiring is different or ?? Somewhere the wait-to-start is getting a constant power and I am stumped where it may be from. I am suspecting either on the '83 it is wired somewhere other than the relay or something else unique to that vintage. Seeing as this is the first year they had the diesel (I think) then wouldn't surprise me to find they changed for later years.

They did change after 86 to another style, but the 83-86 should be the same. I didn't think to look at my old man's 84 when I was there...

The wait to start light lead is actually a black wire with a pink stripe.

And yes, it should be under the orange with white stripe wires.

You can see it in this picture.

You bought it with the bypass intact correct? if that is the case then it wouldnt be there, i removed mine so there wouldnt be any further chance for "gremlins." as for the pink wire, it could be neon freak green, doesnt matter, just make sure that there is a wait to start wire and find out where it gets its power from, i didnt know what a wire was on mine till i touched it to the battery positive and looked in the cab to see my WTS light on, and it was a stereo clear cable. Focus more on point to point, a to b etc etc and you will lose all of the headache. Get behind the WTS light and looke where the wire goes, just keep tracing and you will find out where it goes, my "rewire" took six hours and a lot of cursing, god forgive me, hahaha. send me some pics bro and i will help you the best i can. Dont worry soon you will be answering my questions and helping me.....i promise. Damn i love old trucks!!

Hey all, Thanks for the suggestions & pictures. My glow plug relay does not have the 3rd small wire shown in the photos and I can't find anywhere in the immediate area of the relay but you may be correct that the PO removed when converted to manual glow plug system.
BUT I happened by the dealer today and they had a schematic for wiring of the original glow plug system for the '83 and it appears to be a lot more complex than just a pink wire from the relay's glow plug "hot" terminal including a "wait indicator latching relay" that is supposidely in the dash somewhere, an "after glow relay" and it does not show pink wire on the glow plug relay's large "hot" side terminal. I am now equiped with a wiring diagram so will continue the adventure!
Thanks again for the suggestions & advice.
