Need a tranny,
Well the title says it all; I have a 1995 f-250 super cab with the 7.3L powerstroke, with a dead e4od. Well not dead the clutches have welded them self together, both forward and reverse so no reverse. The truck is just shy of 200,000 miles. The tranny was rebuilt by a questionable tranny shop 2 owners ago, but less than 12,000 on the three year old rebuild. I really don’t use the truck to the best of its abilities the most work it has done is tugged a few cars out of the snow banks. I have been doing research on trying my hand at rebuilding it, but after read treads on here as well as other places it looks like it might be beyond my mechanical know how. I have been given quotes all over the board, the highest being the ford dealership at $3,500 for a new tranny installed. And the low end at $1,600 for a tranny rebuild.
I would like to go with a rebuild, a low mileage used tranny, or even convert to a manual; I can install it with no problem. The problem is I can’t find one locally and right now I really can’t afford anything to great and grand. I got laid off back in March and I have been doing odd jobs on the side, I have been using my wife’s minivan but we are expecting another baby here any day now so I really can’t be hauling my crap in the van if she needs it.
What I’m looking for is any help I can get on tracking down something to through in my truck, so I can get back to making some income. I live in upstate NY.

To rebuild one of these right will run you in the 3 grand price range. I had mine done in my 97 and it was $3000.00. What they did was install an aftermarket torque converter along with a transgo shift kit, and they installed an upgraded set of planetary gears in it. I could have saved about $500.00 on it by going with a factory reman torque converter, but with what I do with this truck, I wanted it built as good as it could be. Some folks on here recommend John Woods or BTS transmissions. They are more expensive from what I have read about them, but they are tough trannys! In my opinion, you do not want to piece this thing back together, because you'll likely be dropping it again in 6 months or so. If it's your livelyhood, do it right the first time.
