ball joints don't typically pop or click

the just get loose and sloppy. then the steering tends to make the truck wander when you are driving around

easy test.
jack up 1 side of the truck and make sure it is safely up in the air

grab that tire and try to shake it side to side, and then up/down

if you get any play, then yes it's a bad ball joint. a good ball-joint doesn't allow any play

the IWE idea sounds pretty likely as well. especially as you mention the vacuum leak
btw, tell your Jeep buddy that the F-150 doesn't have constant velocity driveshafts like Jeeps do. if it ain't in 4x4, they don't spin

unless there is an error in the 4x4 system

When my 4x4 system was acting up this winter, I had some VERY large pops from it not engaging correctly. That was the IWE vacuum solenoid, (Man, was i glad that it was easy to change,)

I jacked up the driver side of the truck to see if there were any play. None. When I dropped it down to the ground, I wanted to see if it would wiggle.

The tire was able to move in and out with the truck being level to the ground. What does this mean?

BTW, thank you guys again for posting to my thread!

Your best bet is to present your problem down in the Explorer forum.
