Power window problems

My power window on the drivers door would not go up yesterday when the button was pushed. After I opened the door the window has started working again. I thought it was maybe a broken wire in the door jamb. Now all of a sudden the drivers side window is working ok but the passenger side is stuck in the open/down position. I cannot get the passenger window to close. I am now thinking that maybe a relay has gone bad. Can someone direct me on where is the best place to start? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

I think the switches go bad because of water from the window washer.

Power Window problems

Does anyone have a procedure, picture, or can you explain exactly where the relays for the power windows are located?

Thanks again,
Robert

The 03 relays are in the fuse box under the dash. I replaced the one that works the windows and the radio.

Just for clarification... The passenger window won't go up using either switch? (Driver side and passenger side.)

That is correct. The passenger side window will not go up when I press either the drivers door button or the passenger door button.

You are assuming the relay, correct? Is that because you've already tested for power at the motor and didn't find any?

Yes, I was able to close the window by putting 12 volts directly on the motor from the battery and the window will work in both directions.

Power window problem

I finally found the problem and was able to fix it. I found two broken wires inside the rubber boot of the drivers side door jamb. It was difficult to get at but I was able to splice two new wires on and connect them at the switch. Everything is working fine now.

The ones on my 01 Ex stick in the closed position frequently. I measured the voltage at the motors and it was about 10 volts with the switch pushed to open the windows. Way too low in my opinion. When my windows stick in the closed position I get my wife to keep 'bumping" the switch while I twist the actuator (on the window) with a pair of channel locks to give the motor a little boost. They will break loose and operate for a while and then I have to give them another boost. I try to pay attention when closing the windows and release the switch before they close too tight. My personal opinion is that Ford did not put adequate wiring in the circuit to handle the current draw of the motors. It is a long way from the battery to the window motors in the rear of the Ex.

Back windows

Many people have a problem with those. A Lot of it is because they stick closed so I put silicone spray on them. Many times they are just fickle and don't want to work. It is hit and miss.

Thanks for your post and figuring out the answer. By chance do you recall which wires were broke? I believe I have the same issue. Thanks, dstrybos@sbcglobal.net.
