Ok i got the new transmission from racerx yesterday and have everthing bolted up. (followed the ford manual and double checked every step) I have 15 quarts of fluid in and have started the truck and let it run. after 5 minutes of running and checking nad adding fluid I moved the gear selector through the gears and got nothing. Then when I went back to park it made a grinding noise and I left it in nuetral and shut off. IS there something I am missing? Do I need to bleed the air out or will it self bleed? Need to run it longer?
The grinding noise you hear might be the parking pawl...which means that something is definitely spinning in side the trans but not getting to the output shaft. The tranny gurus will help you with that one..but here are a couple ideas I have for now:
If you have 4x4...did you bump the transfer case into neutral? This would allow the trans to spin but not the driveshafts.
Here's a really stupid question, please don't be insulted...did you install the driveshaft?
Yes both shafts are installed on the transfer case. I took the return line off and got a tad bit of air and good flow and pressure(with finger over line) so I know the pump is moving fluid and something inside is definitly spinning. I will check the transfer's position. I didn't know if trapped air in the VB or selonoid's could cause this. I let it idle some more and am up to 18 qts of fluid and reading good on the stick
That grinding noise scares me, it did it once to me on an auto and I found out later the torque converter had not fit into the tranny just right and ate it up pdq.....
I was extremly **** about making sure the tc was set. and that it stayed tight to the pump when installing it. As soon as the noise started I immediatly killed the motor with trans in nuetral and the transmission continued to spin. I jumped under the truck and could hear it distinctly from the tail piece-so I was assuming like Jim said that the pawl was tryin to engage but the tranny was still spining.
Ok so if I check the t-case(neutral) do I just let the truck run and shift it back and forth through the gears to let fluid work its way through the tranny? I've never installed a new "dry" tranny and didn't know how long it takes to work the fluid through and get teh air out
If the truck will not roll in park the T-case should be ok.
Did you toss a quart or so of fluid in the TC before the install?
If not you could have had a dry start.
Shift it threw all the gears a few times. This will purge the fluid ckts
of the air.
Ok I shifted through the gears a couple times and all is good. had her out for a short drive and all shifts where good and tc lock up is awsome--even at light throttle. CHecked the fluid and it was actually high after warm up so I drained some out. So now do I need to take it easy on the tranny for awhile or can I romp onit right away? I have the chip off right now just to check it stock and then i'll turn it back on.
Ok I took it out and ran it easy for awhile and then a little harder. Everything shifts and feels fine- no strange noises but my tems are high--around 200. I flushed the liquid to liquid cooler, installed a tru-cool 30k and new lines throughout--5/16 for 2" out of tranny and then 3/8 the rest. I put two in line filters in like bill (racerx) told me. THe tru cool hangs down about 3" below the bumper and the other 4-5 inches above centered at the openings in the bumper. I wanted to take it to work tommorow and tow aroun 9,000 with it but those temps have me worried. Or is it the trans tc and clutch packs breaking in. Any thoughts? I'm know the coolers are flowing good( took the line of while running)
Used mobil1 synthetic fluid--level good
Yes the tru cool had the t-stat valve. Temps are from the TFT (scan gauge) Took it out again after triple checking everything again and temps still went up leveling off around 200 ish--no higher than 205. still in the safe zone, but the towing thing scares me.
tj--does the valve hold the temps at a constant? so if I get on it the valve will full open at around 200 and not let the temps up from there?
Your temps are normal then. The valve will just send the fluid right back to the trans until its hot enough to open the valve then it will allow fluid to the cooler. My trucool will run similar temps all the time. Even towing it just regulates the temps and keeps them steady. I have never even come close to saturating the cooler with heat. I have the scanguage reading 190-200 and the Standalone gauge in the pressure test port reads 20 degree lower than that. Usually around 170-180.
