A few problems

Hi everyone.
I have a 1992 F250 IDI 7.3 2WD supercab with 5 speed and sterling rear end.
I've been having a few problems and I was hoping you could help.
1.) At about 2500 rpms under load, the engine noise changes and gets much louder like it's winding out. I had thought it might me the belt tensioner but am afraid it might be the IP on its way out. The truck still runs fine while making the noise, no hesitation at all and the second I accelerate the noise stops. It comes back when I hold speed steady. Any ideas?
2.) I can't get any fuel from the rear tank to the engine. When I switch the selector from front to rear, I can hear the valve moving. It makes the same noise when I return it to the front tank. Any ideas?
3.) I can smell diesel fuel in the cab while running the a/c. No leaks at the filter. Maybe related to issue 1????

Thanks in advance guys.

For No1 my guess would be that the engine cooling fan is engaging. No2 I don`t know. No3 check the little fuel injector return pipes that run along the top of the injectors for leaks.

1. I would guess the fan clutch locking also, does it sound like a big fan?

2. When you select the rear tank while driving, does the engine quite after a minute or two?
How much fuel is in the tank?

If the fuel level is under 1/2 tank, the suction line in the tank may be cracked or broken off, common problem with older trucks.

3. Do a visual inspection around the injectors and all of the return lines.
One from the fuel filter, one from the injection pump and between all of the injectors.
The return tees on each injector have two rubber O rings that could be leaking as well.
The big trick is, after the O rings get hot a few times, if you move the return lines, they start leaking.

Are you having any starting issues after the truck sits overnight or more?

1.) Come to think of it, it does sound like a big fan. More like a cesna. I will start with a new fan clutch.

2.) I think you might have hit the nail on the head. How do I repair / replace the suction line? Does it connect to the vacuum pump?

3.) After inspection, the return lines are most definitely leaking at the return tees. Can I get a new harness with the return tees or can I just get replacement tees? From dealer or is there a better supplier?

Thank you both for your help. It's very much appreciated.

i belive u have to drop down the tank or if its easier remove ur truck bed to get into the tanks.... Had to do this not to long ago rear tank wouldnt work if i got to about 1/4 of the way... dropped the tank and sure enough the pickup tube had broke.Me i cheaped out and got some reg fuel line and measured how far it needed to go n put a clamp on put it back on n now it works jus fine.

And for the return line t's u can get the whole kit from online sources got mine from Pensecoladiesel.com ...comes with everything u'll need to fix that problem and its not to bad on price...

It is common for fan clutches to lock up for the first few miles of driving until the fluid gets distributed by centrifical force.

After that the temperature of the air flow through the radiator and across the bimetalic strip on the front of the fan clutch controls lockup.

So driving speed, load on the engine, outside air temp, traffic density, terrain, body style aerodynamics and AC on or off all affect how often and when the fan clutch locks and unlocks.

Given the cost of a new can clutch is around 175 dollars, the usual reasons for replacing them is either they never lock and the engine is getting hot when working it or they never unlock which uses more fuel.

As for the fuel supply line, when you extend the pick up tube in the tank, cut a V or fish mouth in the end of the hose so it can not suck against the tank and cause fuel starvation.

The supply line goes from the tank to the tank selector valve, then on to the fuel lift pump on the engine.

Thanks

Great Information. Thank you. I've ordered the injector return line kit and will plan to fix the fuel lines next weekend.
