Does anyone make a kit to put a trailer plug in the bed of these trucks without cutting into the factory wiring? To be honest I haven't looked at the difficulty in wiring to what is already there I just detest cutting into wiring if there is any other option.
Truck is an 06' with the tow command system. Thanks.
I don't have to do mine, I only tow a TT, but i would imagine all you need is the plug with 6 feet of wire and a junction box, preferably water proof that you can tie in both plugs too. A plate to mount the plug in the box should be easy to get as well. Most put it over the wheel well on the driver side. You could check at a couple RV places and see what they have and what they can get you. I would advise if you are splicing in to either a.) solder and shrink wrap or b.) use the water proof junction box. My preference is the box, that way if you ever ruin either plug, its easy to replace without cutting into it all over again. Heavy truck places sell the water proof junction box you want with built in terminals and then all you need is to solder on ends to the wires and bolt em down.
Yeah I have thought about the junction box. Just get a nema 12 JB and some cord grips to keep it water tight. I even have the plug socket for the bed, wire, all the DIN rail and terminal blocks I would need to do this. But I just don't want to run a plug out the back that has to be plugged in and unplugged each time I pull a different trailer. I was hoping there would be an inline adapter that plugged in between 2 sections of the factory harness and sent the appropriate power/signals to the bed plug. Maybe it's just a pipe dream for a perfect world solution that would only exist if I created it.
My 2 previous trucks both had in bed plugs installed before I purchased them. The wiring to them created other operational issues that I was forced to fix. In each case it required returning the factory harness to as near perfect stock condition as possible and then rewiring all the trailer socket connections.
As it is now I have been plugging my 6 pin gooseneck plug into 6-7 pin adapter and plugging it into the factory 7 pin connection on the receiver. It works but occasionally gives me a trailer fault or trailer disconnected message in the truck. I am on my second adapter in 3 weeks and the issue persists. I know the trailer wiring is good as I pull it with my 93' f 350 regularly as well and it never has any problems on that truck. And on the 06' when I pull our horse trailer which is bumper pull with a 7 pin connector I don't have an issue.
Sorry for the novel but I have been giving this much thought as I don't much care to lose the trailer brakes when pulling heavy.
Go with the wiring loom. I did one today and its real easy. When you know where to start. Will try to pm you some pictures as it the photo upload here is a p.i.t.a.
Best regards
Rob
Bunklash thank you for taking the time to find and post that link. That is probably as close to what I'd like as exists. I will let you know how it turns out.
