Check Guage Light

Hello,
I recently purchase a 99 Explorer with the v-6 motor for my wife. The last few days, she noticed that the Check Guage Light will come on for a few seconds. This has happend right after she started it while at an idle.
I did not get a manual with the vehicle!
Does anyone know what sets this off?

Thanks,

Joe

Litterly hundreds of reasons for a CEL. Do some searchs here. Assuming you don't have a scan tool take it to one of the national parts stores (Autozone, Advance Auto, ect...) and have them put it on the scanner. They'll give you the codes your computer has set.

There might not be anything wrong. My 2002 Ex turns on the Check Gage lamp when it's low on fuel. Dunno about the 1999 MY though. You can get a Owner's Manual here for free:

https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

Also, ebay always has them for sale if you need a bound copy for your glove box.

He said "check guage lite" not CEL...

This light comes on when any Gauge in the cluster is reading out of normal range, keep an eye on oil, Volt and fuel.. you will soon pinpoint the culprit.

Thanks for the responce. I have checked all of the fluid levels and they were fine. I took another look at the battery which seemed to be clean. I pulled both terminals and they did have some crud growing between the post and the connector. I cleaned them up and it seems to have cleared up the problem. I guess it was not charging as well as it should have.

As was stated, the Check Gauge light will come on when any of the gauges is out of norm.

On my 96 EB V8, it occasionally comes on at startup because the oil hasn't circulated yet. Usually shuts off and gauge comes up after about 30 secs.

My ride has appx 270K mi on it (odometer stopped working two years ago at 210K), so the sending unit may need replacing.
