I want to use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube in my 1994 F150 302 4x4 with an 8.8 front and rear. Do I need to add friction modifier to this type fluid? Does the front take the same type fluid and friction modifier as the rear?
Your front is a Dana 44, only the rear is a Ford 8.8. The shop manual calls for "4x4 Gear Oil" in the Dana 44. I don't know how it is different. You are probably ok with the synthetic in both. From other posts, additives are not necessary with synthetic lube. If you have a Trac-lok in the rear, leave a little room for the additive, just in case you experience chatter.
Does anyone else know what "4x4 gear oil" is and if it's any different than normal gear oil? Has anyone out there used synthetic gear oil in the rear diff without adding the friction modifier that Ford recommends?
the synthetic will work in both of your axles as for your locker or limited slip if you have the clutch type yes you will need to add the additive to the rear but not the front. and like posted before just leave alittle room for the additive in the rear. As for running synthetic gear oil it works great lasts longer withstands higher operating temps.
