I have been putting together a 78 bronco for mud racing that will have a solid roller cam 460, c6, and 4.86 gears with half ton axles and lockers. My question is which tire to run. The pits usually have 12" - 24" of mud. I have a narrowed my possible tires down to a 38.5x11 bogger that is around 71lbs, 38" tall, and 9.2" wide, 38.5X13 irok that is 76lbs, 39.5" tall, and 11.8" wide. What do you guys think? Any other suggestions? Thanks
Much depends on what type of mud you are running. Mud density and type of mud will play a factor.
You must also consider that while the bogger is considered the best mud tire (DOT) on the market, you should understand that the 38" tire has lug spacing very close together. This minimizes the amount of mud that the tire can displace. More diplacement equals more foward motion but also requires more horsepower.
Some other factors will be whether or not your class will allow mods to the tire such as grooving or not.
Many variables but due to the many factors that can change, there is not one magic answer.
I have a buddy that races a highboy with 38.5X11 boggers and even with the closer tread pattern of that size he makes some respectible runs. All he's really got going for him is a good running 390. I think the skinny tire is a good choice unless your running in mud that lets you dig to china, then you'd want a wider tire to help float a little.
Your choice should be clear, bogger! No other dot tire cant touch it when it comes to mud racing.
Shouldn't that be can?
But I have to agree, the bogger seems to be the best tire. And if your worried about not displacing enough mud you can always cut out the smaller lugs.

So the lug spacing is closer on a 38'' than it is on a 44'' Bogger? Or is it the other way around? I'm unsure of what I'm going to run on my mud truck too.
Yea thanks for catching that typo I can sleep at night now and I bet nobody knew what I met until you caught that.
I'm surprised this is still even a question. Mud racer that requires dot tires? Boggers is the final answer. If you are mud racing and it doesn't matter if its dot or not then you have you pic of several pattern of ag tires.

The spacing on the 38" tire is rather close, thus making it not as desirable as one would think. Now these can be cut, but the factory tire is not all its cracked up to be. I supose that one might consider the weight of the tire and several other factors that might make another tire a more desirable choice. In this size of tire, I might lean more towards theTSL. These displace mud very well, is non directional and if I were considering a slightly larger tire, I would be all over the LTB in the 40 inch tire.
Just a preference really. I loke the boggers, I run them on two of my trucks, but the TSL's ar also very good. I am a huge fan of the Irok, and have a new set of ROckers. Ill see how those go.
In the mud around here, even the skinny boggers with their tight lug spacing far out perform any other tire. I have a set, and their only downfall trail riding here is the fact that they just don't float like a wider tire. For racing, I wouldn't run anything else.
I am planning on getting a set of 39.5's or 44's for trail use come next spring.
