Welcome to FTE. Unloaded and not towing you should be getting alot better mileage than that but towing depending on your foot action, sounds about right for that amount of weight. Guys with the 6.4 will be by to help you further, good luck..

MPG's vary greatly by user. This topic has been a great one for this board. So the question is what to do to help.
For me, best way to squeeze a few miles per gallon: Easy starts, keep it under 2K RPM keep off the boost if possible.
I can get 12-13 city and 14-16 hwy.
Also fuel can be another issue. Stay away from bio-fuel. It is low on energy and will soot more causing more regen's.
This motor has alot of EPA stuff on it mandated by the Fed's so it is now going to be great on MPG's. In addition, one of the reasons this motor pulls so good is it heavily boosted. Gives it the response.

guess with that, this board is ok to post on, and my appologies: with my SuperDuty i get 20 highway. so i guess to answer your question, trade it in on a '03 7.3L and you'll get better mileage
Now on a serious note, i wonder if Ford is thinking of some sort of fix. I forget who, remember the gentleman that was in an accident and had a new one for a week? same thing, 8 mpg. I wonder also if Ford will think about bringing back the 7.3 these new economy regulations are going to hit big pickups hard, but if there's a motor i think that can get good gas mileage, it's the 7.3 maybe even like some big-rigs, when they're on flat interstates, some cylinders do not fire.
