Hey guys there is a 1988 F-250 7.3L diesel 4x4 and the tranny is fried, it is an automatic, this would be the E4OD correct? What do I need to do to replace the tranny? What year had these transmissions in them, any and all info on this would be greatly appreciated thanks much Mike.
Depends on whether you owned this vehicle the whole time or bought it new. My 1994 F350 has a C6 3sp. It could be either but the best method is to determine if you have four forward speeds or three
There should be a tag on the trans correct? Where would it be located? Are there any visual differences in the two that makes it easy to determine the difference?
1988 should technically still be a C6, but if its late 1988 then its possible that you have an E4OD.
If you have an overdrive cancel switch, then its an E4OD. C6 is a 3 speed, E4OD is 4 speed.
C6 will also have vacuum lines attached to a plastic device (VRV or vacuum regulator valve) on the driver's side of the injector pump, The E4OD will have only electrical wires at that same location (throttle position sensor).
Ok so I didn't see an OD cancel switch on the shifter but when I was under the truck from looking at the pictures it appears to be the E4OD transmission, It has the ribs on transmission like in the pictures. Now my question is what transmissions will bolt up to the IDI engine. Will the powerstorke trans work? Thanks again for the help it is greatly appreciated

Dave,
What i am getting at is that what you said is not totally correct. I do have a C6 and i do have a shifter with OD. It can happen, but the OD button does not work. It was from the donor vehicle. Thats all i am sayin!

Dude, that don't count LOL. I'm one to talk though. I probably have enough changes and tweaks in my truck to fill a book.

Your year of truck would have a cancel switch on the dash (to the lower RH side of the steering column if I remember right). The switch moved to the end of the shift lever in 1992.
A powerstroke transmission can be made to work, but those have no speedometer cable, so unless you have a 4wd and reuse the original transfer case you won't have a working speedometer anymore. Also, if you use a powerstroke transmission, you need to get the starter ring (adaptor plate) that came off the same engine, because they are different between powerstrokes and IDIs.
The solenoid body will also have to be changed so that you still run the older design in the newer transmission.
In theory, you could also swap to a C6 3 speed auto, but I wouldn't recommend it. The driveshaft will have to change and you will loose overdrive.
haha yeah the C6 is a bit rough when going highway speeds. I am tracking down a Overdrive unit as we speak and if it is too expensive i will just wait for when i do the engine exchange and throw in the upgraded E4OD.
Ok so what year transmission will bolt right up? I just want to drop the junker and bolt in one that works.
If you want absolutely NO modding work, 1989-1991 are the years you want. If possible, look for one that has been rebuilt by ford and avoid a factory original by ford.
