Some repairs done

Yesterday afternoon I replaced my rear brake pads. I think I fixed the leak on the fuel bowl drain. Replaced up-pipes donut gaskets with SBC ones. Now can really hear turbo, and more power.

Need to look at getting a new torque converter(rocks in a can sound). Would like to beef up the trans some also. Any preference on good converter for less money? Can't swing $1,300. Also ideas for shift kit?

Thanks

I've got transgo shift kits in both of my trucks. I have an aftermarket torque converter in the 97, but the factory converter is in the 02. In my opinion, if you're going to drop the tranny to install a torque converter, you may as well get it rebuilt. As for a good aftermarket torque converter, I don't know what brand is best. Based off the comments from other folks on here, I'd call Cliff at riffraff diesel and see what he thinks. Riffraff is a sponsor of this site.

It's Clay, and he is a good person to talk to. As far as a good affordable upgrade on the TC, the 6.0 unit bolts right in and is only a couple hundred bones.

I have talked to Clay before and bought parts from him.

6.0 TC is stronger? About the same price as a 7.3 TC?

Any info on VB or other trans upgrades? I know using a 6.0 cooler. I read on here once about a off the shelf cooler from NAPA? That was suppose to be a good upgrade.

Thanks

As has the JW and the Transgo kits. BTS VB or JW VB is about a wash- both cost the same, both accomplish the same thing. If you have DP Tunes, the JW doesn't require a re-burn though. The Transgo kits are cheaper and allow you to do the work yourself... the VB's are a bolt in and go mod.

I do not have a DP Tuner yet. That is a future mod. Just want to do the mods/repairs in the right order.

I'll have the trans out to replace the TC. So how much is required to install the Transgo kit? Cost? What does it do? Also cost on VB?

Thanks

The Transgo Tugger is about $90, the HD2 (similar to the tugger but no pump mods) is about $50 IIRC. A VB runs about $225.
For installing either, you need a good in/lbs torque wrench supposedly.

I just called the local trans shop. They gave me prices on stock TC and upgraded TC. They rebuild/build TC as well. Got a price on a trans rebuild. Also is the possibility of upgrading the trans for the power I plan to put through it down the road. They said I could drop the truck off sometime and have them test pressures and test drive to see what kind of shape the trans is in. Thinking about stopping down there and talking to them in person and having them look at truck.
I don't have a bottomless bank account so just want to get all the info I can to do this right. With the least amount of money. Just don't want to walk into this blind.
Thanks for all your help.

Oh yeah another thing. I asked the guy about the price of a 6.0 TC. He said they are the same TC.

Then I'd keep looking for a tranny guy. The 7.3 cooler is nowhere near the 6.0 cooler. If you can't find a deal on a 6.0 cooler, you might look into the tru-cool units. They seem to work well for less $$$.

Oh, I don't have one of those, so I never really paid much attention to what, if any differences there are. Sorry.

Not a problem.
I wanted a stick, but couldn't find one in ex-cab XLT. Actually I found 1 it had 280,000 on it. it needed a new bed and other body and mechanical work. The guy wanted like
10K for it. I walked away.
