Hi everyone, I spent hours driving across the great state of Pennsylvania on I-80 the other day and it really made me wish I had cruise control on my '95 F150 with the 300.
What parts do I need to get from the junkyard? What's involved in this project? Do you think its worth the trouble? Thanks.
hey both of you you can have my cruise control out of my truck if you want it i'm right where 41 and route 1 cross come and get it with all the parts associated with it, and i'm also getting a parts truck tomorrow with cruise control if you want that too
just bring like $10 lol
pm me for an address and directions
all cruise control does is you hit a switch and it uses your engine vacuum to keep your throttle where you put it really simple
you can't have the wheel off of my truck but feel free to take the one off the parts truck i'm getting it's a 1990 300ci 5 speed 4x4
Somehow I doubt that I've yet to see cruise in a truck w/o a leather steering wheel. The leather ones have more electric contacts allowing the switches and not just the horn. So it can't be just the cover, thanks for the thought
Adding cruise to a truck of this vintage is virtually "plug & play". You will need the underhood servo/controller assembly. This plugs in to a connector that is already there (after you unplug the dummy/jumper plug installed at the factory). The distal end of the control cable piggybacks onto the existing throttle cable. Perhaps the only real challenge comes in changing out a non-cruise steering wheel for a cruise one. If your truck has the air-bag system be sure to disconnect the module ONLY as described in the appropriate service literature: Failing to do so could result in deploying the bag; and, in the words of Tommy Boy (the late Chris Farley), "That'll leave a mark!" Serious injury is a real possibility! Treat an airbag with profound respect. With that said, reuse your airbag with the new steering wheel; again following service literature procedures.
While you are at it, consider installing a tilt column for even more driving comfort and fatigue reduction on those long trips!
1966Tbird, thanks for the offer! I just may do that. Do you know if your '90 parts will fit my '95? I know the steering wheels are different.
donner, thats a good idea to install tilt while I'm at it. For the cruise control, do i just have to swap steering wheels or is there more involved in it than just that?
The parts underhood might be the same but the column and wheel definitely are different.
Thank you donnor. Hey do you know if the wiring/contacts are already in the column? It won't help much if the contacts for the switches aren't there for the proper steering wheel.
To add cruise to the 95 you need a 94, 95 or 96 column that has the cruise controls.
The buttons are actually wired in parallel, each changing the resistance between the two wires that go through the column - so depending on which resistance "shows up" to the computer, it knows which button was pushed. That's how Ford multiplexes 5 buttons on two wires.
Underhood is easy, others have described how to do it so I won't reiterate.
The 90-93 full size ford car columns also fit "just fine" and have the same controls, though some of the connectors are different so to cut and splice you'll need to take some of the wiring harness that connects to teh column, with the column. A pair of tin snips makes this easy work.
I have a 92 Town Car column in my 93 F350 crewcab. It's the same red as my interior, added cruise, tilt, etc. I removed the airbag module from the assembly, and reinstalled the shell and the massive horn pad for asthetic reasons. My removing the module was to avoid accidental tripping since my 93 didn't have airbags nor any controllers for such.
thanks for the info frederic. As far as the underhood stuff goes, could I grab the parts from a 94, 95, or 96 with a different engine or do they have to be from a 4.9?
What parts do i need from the steering wheel? Just the wheel and all wires from it? Are you saying that I need to take the entire steering column for this to work?
Thats really cool that you got the towncar stuff to work on your truck but I don't think I'm that skilled enough yet to do that. It would be easier for me just to find a truck to take from.
