Im a heavy diesel mechanic. I make 36 an hour plus bennies. I had to spend 5 years working on tractors at 8 bucks an hour to get the spot im at now. I got the training threw working on tractors and building up my dodge cummins.

OK, dumb question, but why wouldn't a couple of Jarheads just consider extending for another year with a change in MOS to get the learning and OJT out of the way as a diesel tech?

That's got to be a lot easier on the knees than humpin a 60 Adam. No offense Chris, but I don't imagine the POG work is too hard on the body parts.

I was 0311 for the record.
If my unit would send me back to MOS school I would gladly do it. If it was available when I enlisted I would have been a heavy equip. mech.

Not that I have anything against grunts because my best friend/brother and several other best friends are grunts, but my POG job is alot more labor intensive than people think.

Even the grunts have it easier now. Seems like after the Army decided the LAV was too quick for them the grunts get to spend much more time on foot. I wasn't trying to imply your MOS was not labor intensive, but when a MCCRES becomes your daily life, wait to see how your knees feel in another 20 years or so. Lots of guys I know stayed in after transferring to a REMF post. Still physical, but beats humpin an ALICE pack 6 days a week.

I'd guess the only chance you've got for a new MOS school would be to talk to someone about extending. Shorter extensions are usually offered when you're not coming up on your EOS date. Otherwise, talk about extending your IRR duty to active for the new school.

I was thinking about that Chris, I'm not sure if they'll let me though.

There is in most cases better money in equipment, and you dont have the highway grime with it. It is still a dirty job, but not as bad as OTR. My base salary is around 50K a year, and with built in OT it is around 65K, plus vacation and benefits.

For the most part equipment is a lot easier to work on also, and it is everywhere.

Yea, its like 5 minutes away from my house. The guy that owns it is one of my good friends stepfather. We went all the way to the back a few months ago and had a huge bonfire with a few kegs haha
In fact...my avatar is a pic of the bonfire we had!

Out in the middle of nowhere and we had a great time.
