Air compressor Question Again..

I was told that Ingersoll Rand was bought out by black and decker/dewalt, and since then the quality of their compressors has gone down considerably. Any comments on this. It;s quite a bit of money to spend so I want to get the best compressor I can get for my money looking to 1k or less if possible..
Thanks
Brad

That doesn't really surprise me....... all IR air tools are made in china or somewhere. Look for a Quincy. They have "Proudly made in USA" right on them, the quality is top notch too.......I've had one in my commercial shop since new in 2001, never a bit of problem. Glad to see you are researching this first... It's a big purchase. T/M

Thanks. I just spent the last three hours on the phone with Sears. They didn't now if the motor on their 80 gallon was a 100% continuous duty cycle. The call center and store manager didn't even now who manufactured their line of compressors. I finally found someone at the call center that said their compressors could run 100% but they were only really meant to run at 50-75%. I going to start looking around for Quincy any other suggestions. The electrician is coming tomorrow to install the 240 volt outlet. Well off to search more online.

The quality of most air compressors designed for home use has come down considerably over the years. I still have a Sear Best 2hp 20gal compressor that I bought 30 years ago and have used it extensively with not one failure/problem. But they do not make them that way anymore.

The task at had is to find the “sweet spot”. Using the specifications of the compressor, its price, parts availability, warranty, shipping cost/location, intended use, and loss of use, calculate its value to you.

Considering the weight/size and the fact that not too many items can go bad, e.g., pump, motor and that most have 2 or three year warranties, buying a home version may be all you need.

Sure commercial grade are the best but for the price differential and the fact your hobby is not a business, time/value of money comes into play.

When I was in the market for a compressor a couple of years ago I consulted with a friend who had worked several years as a service technician with a company that sold and serviced commercial Quincy and Ingersoll compressors before starting his own commercial air compressor service business. He indicated that Quincy is one of the best IF you can find a good one in your price range. He also suggested I check with a company in Downs, KS that sold a brand called Industrial Gold Series, which if I recall correctly is a copy of another well respected compressor. I ended up purchasing a true 5 hp 2 stage single phase 220V with an 80 gal. tank. It was around $1150 delivered (but I'm within 3 hours of Downs, KS). I have had no problems with this unit and it delivers all the air I need for blasting or running air tools. You might check that brand name on the internet or if you want to call the guys in Downs, KS to see if there is a dealer near you that you could check out, they are:

Good luck!
