First post in this forum. I have a chance to get a pre '73 crewcab f250. Not even sure of the year but it's a bumpside. Not sure if it's 4x2 or 4x4 yet either. It is sitting in my buddy's cousins tow yard so I haven't seen it up close, but I can probably get it for pretty cheap. Are these much different than the mid 70's trucks? Parts hard to find? Anything in particular to look out for. I think the old crews are really cool trucks, but I'd have to get rid of my '76 SC to keep the crew but it may be worth it. Any thoughts?
Mike, I think the only person who can really say whether or not it's worth it is you.
What kind of condition is it in compared to your '76 SC? The crewcabs are definitely cool, especially 4X4. I think you're gonna need to go down there and see if you can take a closer look and get more specifics on it.
As for parts being hard to find, I'd have to say no, not really. Many parts are still available from parts stores, and virtually everything is available in reproduction parts from NPD, Dennis Carpenter, and several others.
Rust is the main thing to watch out for. It's usually not much of a problem here in our part of the state, but who knows where the truck spent most of its life. Check the front cab mounts (visible through the wheel wells,) the floorboards, particularly just inside the rocker panels, the front edge of the roof above the windshield, etc.
My '68 had been sitting in a field here at Clear lake for ten years before I got it, and spent it's whole life up here. There's no rust on it at all (other than a little surface rust here and there, but no rot.)
I'd be interested to see this beast if you get it...!
Parts are getting harder to find at your local auto parts without them having to order them. but LMC, NPD, DENNIS and others are making new parts as well as modern updated parts for our trucks. The 68-72 trucks also get rust in back of cabin bottom corners and between the two sheet metals in the bed area above the trim line. The early crewcabs are almost extinct, would like to see pics if you get it. Good luck
