E40d shudder and fix.
To all who have these things. I was having real bad shudder last week and hard and slow shifts. I didn't know what it was until I saw the messages on this board and realized I had a serious problem. So Monday I drained the torque converter through the hole provided and then dropped the trans pan and drained the fluid. I then refilled it with Dextron III. I know someone on this board said not to use this but use Dextron II. I'm not sure why the difference but anyway now the truck runs like new and I hardly feel the shifts and there is no more shudder. I don't know how long this will last but it's nice while it does. Woody

Mark is right. You should be sure that the fluid you use has the Ford Mercon rating. I think that the procedure you used was perfect. I have done this on quite a few late model Ford transmissions with the same problem and had excellent long term results. Good Job.

Most of the fluids that are Mercon-3 rated are also rated for Dextron III and vice-versa.As a matter of fact, the Motorcraft Mercon 3 also says Dextron-III on the bottle. Mercon 5 is a different fluid altogether and should not be interchanged for Mercon/dextronIII.
