Speedometer stuck at 70 mph

I am thinking I need to replace the speedometer in my 1985 F150. Checked out the cable, and it rotates from the bottom, but the speedometer is setting at 70 mph and does not go to the low peg, or move for that matter.

So, I am thinking the speedo head is shot.

Anyone have any idease on how to fix or where to find a speedo head for this truck?

Thanks

Thanks, figued the speedo head was shot. But the salvage yards here in Reno don't hae anything this old in them (at least that is what they say on the phone). Going to have to find somewhere close by or order online if I can find one.

I have a white faced speedometer sitting in my garage if you're interested. I switched to a speedo with the trip odometer.

Have you actually taken anything apart yet and *looked* at it? Perhaps you can just tap/
unstick the needle and it'll spring back down to 0? Removing the cluster isn't hard, removing
the clear, plastic shield is even easier. Here's a warning, though; those needles &
assemblies are *delicate,* don't handle them roughly.

Syscostang, Hittman

Thanks for the offer, how much do you want for the speedo?

email is webrx@charter.net if you would send me yours we can work out price and mailing info. My boy will be a happy camper if he can get a working speedometer.

Thanks

CTUButis,
Did not pull the gage yet, did take off the dash cover, disconnect the cable, make sure it spins from the tranny side. I did tap it a little (not hard) and I Intend to pull the gage out this weekend and take a look at it. But am not hopeful, as I said it is stuck at 70 and I have not ever seen a failed cable stick the needle high, and as I also said, mine spins fine and free.

Thanks - I am such a ditz sometimes....

it's been a long time since I did any serious mechanicing, like back in the late 70s. But I just picked up this 85 F150 for my boy, kind of a father son project, and we are working through it.

I am sure this wont be the last time I step on my nether parts - Sorry!

My gages are blackfaced, but a working speedo is better then none.
