I'm having an issue where my Ex runs fine when started, but either cranks really slow or not at all (like the battery is way down). It will start if jumped. When it's running all the electronics function fine and there is no "fade out" as in the case of the alternator not charging. In fact I just returned from a 650 mile trip and except for the starting issue the truck functions normally. It's got a Motorcraft battery in it which I suspect is the original. The view dot on the battery is green, yet I suspect more and more that the battery just quit holding a charge. It's either that or there is a short in the system somewhere draining the battery with the key off.
Any thoughts?
Lastly what is the biggest (amps) battery I can get in the standard battery carrier on an Ex? ('05, gasser)
I would definitely budget for a new battery. I just replaced mine (750cca) and it, too, was an 05. The "gauge" on it was green and actually still is as it's in my garage...but it sure didn't like trying to start my truck.
It's probably holding a surface charge, if you put a DMM on it will read in the 12.6 range, but if you turn the lights on it will drop way down. It wouldn't hurt anything though to verify that the alt is putting out 13v+ too.
I believe Optima's quality is falling. I had one blue top that lasted 4 years, then I went through 3 more in the next 3 years before giving up on them. A lot of other brands are producing AGM spiral cell batteries, so far I am pleased with my Exide Orbital.
