It's time to rebuild my C6 in a 68 SB bumpside. It sits behind a stout 390 and has 3.25 gears behind it. I tow a 3000 pound boat, other assorted trailers, and haul heavy loads.
My question to this forum is has anyone put in "wide ratio" gears out of an OD tranny in their C6. If so, how do you like them? Seems like the best of both worlds. Low range torque in 1st and 2nd and keeps 3rd 1 to 1.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I searched the tranny forum but too many appplications for the C6 and...the search function won't use "C6" because it's too short?? What am I supposed to use? See six
This is all cheaper than a beefed OD trans, starting at $2000+, or a Gear Vendors OD at about $3000.
Now of course, I have not answered your basic question as I do not have a C6 and the last time I flogged one was 20+ years ago. So perhaps another member will have massaged theirs and can give a first-hand report. Hope the links help, if not, feel free to flame me and call me names. Good luck with it.
The wide ratio gears take first and second out of an OD. Not 4th. That's not possible. You take the front gears out of an E04D(?) which are 2.76 and 1.52(?) instead of 2.46 and 1.46(?). don't quote those gear ratios but you get the idea. It lowers first and second and leaves 3rd 1 to 1. Good for low end torque.
As you can see, it's not cheap,....so I'm trying too see if anyone has done the swap and if so,...is it worth it? I'm rebuilding my own tranny so it will be a little cheaper. Thanks for the links but I have a couple others that are a little cheaper. Some of the kits come with needle bearings to replace the thrush washers. No thanks.
C6 is 1:1, but with lower first and second, you can run the taller axle ratio easier, or perhaps in this case, live with it easier.
Bingo, exactly right. Nice grunt in 1st and 2nd for hauling (nothing wrong with toasting a couple 1500's here and there either)and no whining on the freeway. Sticking with 3.25 in the rear would put me around 2500 at 65-70mph. It's all about the set-up and getting the rear right.
