Am getting ready to tag my new 1990 F350 with the 7.3 idi and I noticed when I crawled under it that there was no Catalytic Converter installed. Did these trucks originaly come with cats? If so I may be visiting the exhaust shop before I go the emissions testing place.
Nope, Diesels were pretty much emmisions free, they had to do a couple small things like the CDR and what not, until 95, then they got cats, then in 03 they got EGR's, in 07 they got DPF's, and it looks like in 2010 they will be getting Urea injection.
Some guys run BIO when going in for inspection...... cuts down the smoke when they do the full throttle opacity test...... I think that's what they call it.
These trucks can breath free and easy because those systems were not needed back in the day they were sold, so you don't have to worry about emissions testing if you didn't find a catalytic converter.

I got a better idea, take an old junk motor, over torque the rod bolts stretching them pretty good, maybe even knock the anti-spin tabs off a rod bearing or two.
Stuff it in a vehicle and carefully take it and have them do their "Full Throttle Test" ...
I'll bet that tech will think twice the next time!

Festus, I just had to give points for that one. It would mean a lot of time and effort put into that engine, but damn the look on his face would probably be worth it. We should coordinate a national "attack" like that. With enough engines blowing on the emissions tests, we might just do some damage to that silly slush fund program.
I think in BC they are phasing out the emissions testing because newer vehicles generally burn so clean anyway. There is hope for other places.
