E4OD- All gears run strong, BUT
I have a 1990 F250 with a 460 engine and an E4OD.
The tranny has all the gears and they are real strong but
it has a problem. When switch on dash is in OD and the shifter is in 1st gear it is strong, in second gear it is strong. when in Drive Or OD the tranny will do nothing. WHen i press the button and take it out of OD all my gears run strong. 1st, 2nd, and drive will shif through all the gears. After I reach the speed of 40 mph and hit the od button on the dash I have the 4th gear and it runs strong. But when I let my speed drop below 35 I have nothing again. I then have to click the button back out of OD and then retain all my gears. I had one garage tell me it is the computer, another said it was the valvue bodie. ANother said I need a complete rebuild. SO tell me which one is right. I sure hope it is the shop that says the computer in the tranny.

Sorry, but the guy that told you it's the computer is wrong.
You have a failed one way clutch. The transmission needs to be removed and torn down. If you want to do it cheap you could probably just replace the one way clutch, but once it's out and torn down you really should replace all the worn parts.

THanks for responding Mark. Although I really didn't want to hear what you had to say. THe computer would have been much easier. Ha!
Anyway maybe you can explain how I have all the gears but still have the problem. I mean does this one way clutch have it's own set of gears

It would take me hours of typing to explain how an automatic uses one way clutches.
An easier solution, and probably clearer, can be found at www.howstuffworks.com. Go to the automotive section. They have a very good article on automatic transmissions. I think it explained one way clutches, too. It's been a while since I read it.
