I have an 84 f150 xlt that I bought a few months ago, The transmission clunks when going into overdrive which I understand by talking to other AOD owners is a characteristic of this tranny. My problem is that whem in overdrive and reduce speed or try to accelerate, the tranny is very slow to downshift into 3rd gear. Downshift into 2nd and 1st seems a little slow but not as noticable as coming out of overdrive. Any suggestions
I have adjusted the downshift cable for the best performance (do a search, there is a link that explains how to do this with pictures) but I think this tranny in stock form is just lazy.
:-staun Downshift cable?? There is NO downshift cable on an aod!!!!! This is a throttle valve PRESSURE cable. It is a 1 time adjustment using a guage block and a pressure guage. I would not recommend adjusting this cable by "shift feel" If you guess and set pressure too high, harsh or no- upshifts happen, guess too low and trans is toast. Doesn't take but a few miles either. The pre-88 aod's had a hard upshift into od, usually had to back off the throttle slightly to get to engage, and would take at least 3/4 throttle to downshift. Just my .02 worth
OK, sorry, TV cable. One time adjustment? I followed the steps at www.txchange.com. Shifts much better, still a little early on upshift. But the motor runs like crap so it could be tricking the tranny into upshifting.
Thanks for the tip. The motor in my truck is not original and I don't believe the motor is out of a 84 f150. I have a rod that connects the throttle lever to the kickdown lever on the tranny. I'm not sure if the tranny was changed with the motor or if it is original, is there any way that I can verify the year/make of the engine and tranny? If so, where exactly would the numbers be located? Is the kickdown adjustment the same on older model trucks?
