Memorial Day 2009

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Memorial Day, and will take at least a few moments to remember what it's all about.

I learned something about flag protocol:

It should be flown at half-staff (or with a black streamer attached) until noon, local time, and only then hoisted to the top (or the streamer removed).

See: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagcode.htm

That's what I learned today, and I'm not a'learnin' anything more until tomorrow!

Beautiful picture Steve, and a great comment. We do tend to get too caught up in how we are going to spend the holidays off, and not enough time spent in remembrance. I can't rep you, but you get a virtual rep.

Dr. Laura (yeah, I know, but still) yesterday read a letter on the air about the guarding of the Tomb of the Unknown in Arlington. I'll never forget when Carol and I watched the changing of the guard when we visited in 1995. If you ever get anywhere near Arlington, don't miss the opportunity to tour the grounds.

when i was in 8th grade my class went to the east coast during spring break to see all those sites over there. We went to the Tomb of the Unknown, my classmates chose me to carry the wreath that they placed on the Tomb that day, i carried it out of the litle pavillion and down to the gaurd, i didnt actually carry it, i walked with the Marine who carried it. But it was one of the most vibrant impressing memories i will ever have. A huge honor as well. i wont ever forget that
