i am pretty sure that all of the ford front end axles are reverse cut. therefore they will not interchange with the chevies. but the ford dana 60 rear will interchange with the chevy dana 60 front. just some useless info.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jun-02 AT 06:18 AM (EST)]Are the "reverse cut" and "high pinion" the same? I thought the pre-77 had the "low pinion" and after that it was the "high pinion"
I guessed that the high pinion was a reverse cut and the low pinion was a standard cut.
After re-reading your post I noticed your excluding the F250 so that leaves me out.
The high pinion was a reverse cut gear. But the carriers were the same. Chevy never used the high pinion setup only Ford. The TTB Dana 44 and solid Dana 44 carriers are interchangable but not the gears.
You could do it but it won't last long.

:-X23 No,no,no......well, maybe, My DANA axle kit catalog lists the same part# for a C$#%Y Ring&Pinion assembly as the D-44 for an Early Bronco that still ran the low pinion gears. Same part# so how can it run a different bolt pattern than the Ford low pinion??????

Karjay and all, here is the scoop on when Ford used the low pinion and the high pinion.
From 1959-1977 1/2 The F-250 used a Low-pinion D-44,
1977 1/2-1979 F-250 used Hi-pinion D-44.
From 1959-1965 the F-100 used the Low-pinion D-44.
From 1966-1979 the F-100 used a Hi-pinion D-44, Drums from '59 thru '75, discs from '76-on...
The Early Bronco from 1966-1971ish used the low pinion D-30
From 1971ish-1977 it used the Low-pinion D-44.
Big Bronco 1978-1979 used HI-pinion D-44
1974-1975 D-60 was closed knuckle and Low-pinion with Drum brakes. Same axle shafts as the HD Big-hub #3500 D-44.
1976-1977 D-60 was open Knuckle Low-pinion with Disc brakes,
different axle than HD D-44.
1978-1979 D-60 was open knuckle with Hi-pinion with discs.
( This is the Bomb )
Mr N., you're still holding out on when Dana went Hi-pinion. I assume it is '66 since I do have hard #'s to back it up to '67.
