I have a 2003 F-250 6.0psd with a torqshift. Warm weather is hear and im still having cold start issues. When I start it up after it has sit all night or after sitting for several hours it will spit and sputter and puke out white smoke out of the exhaust. When I start down the road it wont get over 10 miles an hour and will jerk and sputter while pouring out white smoke out of the exhaust and transmission shifts real hard and wont change until it gets around 2800 to 3000 rpms, this will continue for around 5 to 10 minutes until it warms up and it will run fine then afterwards. What could be my problem? It seems to be getting worse each time now and is very irritating. If anybody has had this problem before or knows what it could be PLEASE let me know I would REALLY appreciate it. THANKS
Could be a number of things. If the filters and fluids are all up to snuff, do you have the latest induction heating flash for cold starts. That would be a good place to start.
Thanks for the reply. I just had all filters replaced and a complete lube service last week and still no change I thought that might have been the problem also. I have heard about guys having the reflash thing done but hadnt checked into it at the dealership. I figured it would be expensive so I was going there as a last resort.
Definitely check for codes. I would also load test the batteries and have the alternator checked. Could be an injector or several of them, your FICM, leaking EGR cooler, or etc.
Did you have the filters and fluids changed at a "Quick Lube" place? If so, what fluids and filters were installed. It DOES make a difference.
that sounds the same as my 03 was before i got the inductive heating flash if it was below 0 i had to have it plugged in now that i got it reflashed it starts when its -36c without being plugged in i hit a deer and cut my blockheater cord off i didnt realize it for a few days but it blew me away that it started on the first try with command start
I've got an 05 F250 and although it doesn't smoke it does go slow and shifts hard when you first take it out but it only does it on the first take off. I'm taking it to the dealer tuesday for some oil leaks should i have them check for trouble codes on this?
The inductive flash is actually the least expensive of the options that you have providing that you do have the proper filters installed. If it were mine I'd bite the 100 dollar bullet for the flash 1st and follow up with a diagnostic test if that doesn't work. DO make sure that you are at a competent dealer when this is done or all bets are off.
thanks for the replies and info. what i cant understand is that once it is warmed up it runs like a brand new one you couldnt ask for anything better i mean i pull a heavy gooseneck about three times a week with no problem getting about 11 to 12 miles to a gallon and without the trailer and its bone stock i might add all but the straight pipe and airaid intake i get from 16 to 17 mpg. i did notice the other day while i was waiting to have my trailer unloaded it did spit and sputter like it had a little miss in it for just a minute or two then it was fine. i have a very good mechanic do my service work who is also a ford man and i use only motorcraft filters.
mine was doing the same thing and it was the EGR cooler..it was cracked internally...that allows coolant to run down into the exhaust and then down into the cylinders...When you start it up in the morning or after it sets for a long time it will idle rough like that because it's taking time for it to burn off the coolant in that cylinder..then it runs fine.
Mine runs a little rough until it warms up but thats b/c the dealer just put in 15 qts of 15-40 after the HPOP. I have the latest flash and it runs much better on Rotella 5-40 syn than the 15-40 dino. Maybe something else to try after you get it straightened out.
