Alright I finally found a donor truck for my engine swap.
mine is an 83' with a 300 i6 and a warner T18 but i now have a junkyard special 84 with a 302 and A C6.
anybody have any ideas for a good motor build on a 302?
I will be running the warner t18 and am going to have to swap the gears in the rear-end which are currently 2.47(not a typo).
I have a ford 9 inch open diff with 3.00 and a 8.8 with the 2.47s. it wil be a daily driver .. my Beast. it's a long bed 2wd by the way and a true dirt road cadillac.
I have driven the six for years and I just dont like it, the mpg sucks, and it has no *****. That to me is an unacceptable combination, so please dont try to talk me into the six.
With all due respect, a 460 would have no ***** with a 2.47 rear end.
For a motor build, there are a couple of guys in the 87-96 group with good built 302's, but you need to change your heads to the E7 heads off of the Explorer sport. A good nice cam, free flowing intake and headers.
naw the 2.47s gotta go like one of ya said, the 460 would be a dog with them gears. Which are stock by the way, I dont know why ford geared it like that , but they did.
I was thinking some 3.55 gears a cam with a 1200-4500 band, a set of headers and possibly a small autolite 4 barrel, about 9 to1 compression on the bottom end and possibly a port job on the stock windor heads.
any opinions?
The ol F100 got 18 mpg but she was completely wore out as in burned a quart of oil every 100 miles, so I bet new she got close to 20, but was real real real sluggish above 60 or so, but she cruised like a 1600 rpm or so.
I would def go with 3.55's for a 302, they make more power up higher than the low grunted 300.
2.47's are way too high for mileage unless you were driving downhill nonstop. 2.73's for a 300 or 3.08's for anything else is for mileage, unless you have an OD then you can get lower gears which will help in the city.

Thats funny because it needs to go downhill with a tail wind to cruise right, but it can haul a#$ under the right conditions.
Those are stock gears by the way, came from ford in 83'
If I could get 17-20mpg on the highway with the I6 I would build it instead of the 302 (which is what I have on hand to build). But then again the V8 with a good exaust can be built to have that mean little growl I like so much.
I have owned this truck for about 8 years and it has been reliable, I like it and want to keep it.
What is with the 6 anyway, most people here seem to think it the best thing around, after driving mine for 9 years I am not impressed with its performance, the reliability has been excellent however and its easay to work on.
maybe I will try some different gears in the ole truck before I commit to either build, yall recommeng 3.55? I can also get 3.25 and swap to the 9 inch, be alot easier to change gearss than the 8.8.
I would def do a gear change before changing motors. Those 3.25's will work.
As I've mentioned of course you aren't gonna like its performance. Even a 400 hp 460 would have crappy performance with your gearing.
Reliablity, never die attitude, and being different is why everyone loves the 300.
Alot of people bash the 302, but thats mainly because the only ones they have ever been around are generally in front of 2.73's or 3.08 which is not what a 302 needs, the 302 is a high revving little puppy that does wonders with 4.10. I out pulled a buddies 95 F150 351W because he had 3.55's in his and an auto, but with my T18 and 4.10's I smoked him, we were each pullin 16ft utility trailers with roughly 150 heavy square bales each.

Thats exactly what I mean dean, the 302 is a damn good motor for mid range power and can handle some abuse when built right.
the 6 has been good to me, it blew a head gasket about 4 years ago when I was on vacation, changed the gasket at a campground in colorado and havent had a problem since.
I think I would rather have an 8 though, it just that nithin runs like the v8
i am attempting to do something similar. build something mild but have a little go when you need it, but at the same time be efficient. having a mustang with a 302 makes me believe it should have similar results except for the added weight of the truck. if you loosen up the exhaust and free up the intake it will respond. i used to have a 77 F150 and got blackjack true dual kit and it worked well. just installing any cam better than stock it will respond and if you have the motor out its always got to install a windage tray. E7 or stock truck heads are fine but for a little more power a set of GT40's or GT40P's are great. top it all off with a 5 speed or something with overdrive and gears are somewhat irrelavent and mileage can be retained. alot can be done with the 302, there is as much or more available for the 302 as small block chevy's.
i was planning on getting rid of my 302,but found out i have a 3.00 rear and with the od trans 1600 rpm's 65mph.and am getting 17 mpg.i have my f250 for pulling so i guess i'll just leave her ,being my daily driver. depending on what you want to do with it,should determine what to put in there.good luck.
